Location
Located in the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Medina, La Sultana is perfectly positioned for access to Marrakech’s main attractions. Follow a tumbling maze of alleyways and souks (open-air markets) to the bustling canvas bazaars of Jemma El Fna Square. Since the 12th century, the Sultans of Morocco have called the citadels of the Imperial Kasbah home as the remarkable Saadian Tombs, the sun-beaten Royal Palaces and the intricate mosaics of the Bahia Palace are all just a short walk away. Newly built boutiques are also starting to spring up as the medina ushers in the next generation of craftsmen.
Accommodation
The hotel consists of five separate riads, grandiose traditional Moroccan houses centred around an interior garden courtyard, each with their own individual boutique style. In their detailed perfection, the 28 rooms and suites foster an intimate atmosphere, featuring antique furniture, fireplaces and collections of artwork all framed by sculpted, high-vaulted ceilings. A complimentary non-alcoholic minibar, WiFi, soundproofing and satellite TVs bring the accommodation back to the modern day.
Dining
In winter, dinner is served in the cosy confines of the patio while, come the summer, guests are invited onto the rooftop to dine with views over the Red City’s markets out to the snow-capped Atlas Mountains. The restaurant serves traditional Moroccan food informed by seasonal flavours; expect dishes such as lamb couscous with seven vegetables and home made foie gras. For the indecisive, order from an epicurean selection of degustation menus while lunches consist of charcoal grill offerings and salads prepared to guest’s specification.
Facilities
La Sultana’s spa, recognised by Condé Nast Traveller’s 2015 Gold List and as Morocco’s Leading Spa Resort by the World Travel Awards, is expectantly superb. Relax with an open-air massage or choose between the Jacuzzi, beauty centre, sauna and one of the two hammams. Elsewhere, you’ll find an outdoor heated swimming pool, a gym and an excellent cooking class where you can discover the secrets of Moroccan cuisine.
