Kangaroo Island is hailed as Australia's Galápagos, but it's also an island of breathtaking landscapes. A third of the island is made up of national and conservation parks, with dense bush, tall forests, more than 500km of cliffs and beaches, and geological marvels like the Remarkable Rocks, carved by the wind into extraordinary shapes, creating the perfect environment for some of Australia's most iconic wildlife including sea lions, koalas and pelicans.

You'll spend two days of this nine-day itinerary exploring wildlife-rich Kangaroo Island before heading to South Australia's famed wine regions to the north of the state capital, Adelaide.

Benefiting from a warm climate, clear skies and a cooling breeze, the Barossa Valley is one of Australia's best-known wine regions, home to upwards of 150 wineries, the majority of which offer tasting facilities. You'll also visit Clare Valley, home to the cycle-friendly Riesling Trail, and Mclaren Vale, known for its shiraz and cabernet sauvignon, before returning for a final night in Adelaide.

Day 4
Kangaroo Island

Fly from Adelaide to Kangaroo Island, where you'll spend the next night.

Known for its rich abundance of flora and fauna, Kangaroo Island is a hotbed of native Australian wildlife. Your first stop after being collected from your hotel is the Seal Bay Conservation Park, where you can walk among sea lions lying sprawled across the beach. Then climb the great sand dunes of Little Sahara before heading inland to the Parndana Wildlife Park for a chance to pat koalas and feed kangaroos. Enjoy a picnic lunch before turning your attention to the north coast, where coastal walks and swimming spots await. Finish today with a walk through the drooping oaks of Lathami Conservation Park to spot kangaroos, wallabies and rare cockatoos before returning to your island accommodation.

Stay: Molly's Run (Superior)

Meals: Lunch & dinner included

Day 5
Kangaroo Island

Start today at Flinders Chase National Park, where koalas, echidnas, possums and kangaroos can be spotted among the scrub and tall trees. On the coast you'll visit Admirals Arch, a natural rock formation where New Zealand fur seals haul themselves out of the ocean to rest, and the naturally sculpted Remarkable Rocks.

After a sumptuous lunch, cooked by your guide, stroll down Koala Avenue before driving to Kelly Hill Conservation Park, where huge numbers of kangaroos graze the grassy flats that lie adjacent to the bush. The day ends with a visit to Vivonne Bay and Point Ellen, where you can comb the beach for shells as you watch out for colonies of penguins.

Transfer to the airport at the end of the day for your flight back to Adelaide where you'll collect your rental car and spend the night.

Days 6-7
Barossa Valley

Travel north by car through rolling countryside to perhaps the best known of all Australia's wine regions, the Barossa Valley.

Home to some of the world's best shiraz, the Barossa boasts more than 150 wineries - most of which keep their doors open and their bottles uncorked for tastings. Although wineries are spread over quite a large area, there are a number of places where several are clustered together, making life a lot easier for visiting wine lovers. Seppeltsfield Road, for example, is home to 16 wineries as well as the superb Maggie Beer's Pheasant Farm, just one of the many superb restaurants spread throughout the region. Check-in for two nights at The Louise, set among the vineyards with an award-winning restaurant and wine cellar.

Meals: Breakfast included

Stay: The Louise, Barossa Valley (Deluxe)

Days 8-9
Clare Valley

Continue north to the Clare Valley, one of the state's oldest wine regions. The valley is best known for its boutique wineries, whose cellar doors are generally located quite close to each other along the Main North Road. Basing yourself at Thorn Park by the Vines - whose three stunning guest rooms create a wonderfully exclusive and private feel - you'll have plenty of time to get a taste of the area. Perhaps hire a bike and cycle the Riesling Trail, which runs for 25km past several cellar doors along the old Riverton to Spalding railway line.
