In just over two weeks, you’ll drive along scenic byways to some of America’s best-loved national parks including the granddaddy of them all – Yellowstone. You’ll also visit Grand Teton’s alpine lakes and the Cascade’s craggy summits, overnighting in log cabins and enjoying the fireplace-warmth of Triple Creek Ranch in Helena. You’ll then finish at the Pacific West coast, a contrast to Wyoming and Montana with sweeping drives and the parks and river walks of Seattle.
Day by day itinerary
Fly to Salt Lake City where you’ll pick up your rental car at the airport and make the short drive up into the Wasatch Back Mountains. Your home for the night is either the excellent Hotel Park City, ideally positioned in the heart of the United States’ largest ski area, or the Double Tree by Hilton, another stylish Superior option equally well placed for hitting the slopes.
Stay: Doubletree by Hilton Park City (Superior) or Hotel Park City (Superior)
Grand Teton National Park
Heading north, you’ll drive to the jagged peaks of Grand Teton that rise 7,000 feet above a valley floor dotted with sparkling blue lakes. Drive past the shores of Jenny Lake and up to Signal Mountain for views of the entire region. You’ll stay at Jackson Hole, a river basin at the centre of a mountain-ringed valley, in either the Lexington or the idyllic Teton Mountain Lodge. If you’re visiting in winter, enjoy everything from skiing and snowmobiling to dog sledding and snow shoeing. Year round hiking, biking and horse riding are an excellent way to see the area’s dramatic scenery.
Alternatively, upgrade to a stay at Amangani for the ultimate in ranch luxury. All-suite accommodation hosts panoramic valley views while fine dining fuels everything from winter sports to summer hikes along the migratory paths of moose and elk. Return to heated pool soaks and indulgent massages.
Stay: The Lexington at Jackson Hole (Superior) or Teton Mountain Lodge (Superior)
Yellowstone National Park
Spend two days in Yellowstone, America’s first national park. It’s home to stunning peaks, shaggy grizzlies and half the world’s geysers. Tumbling waterfalls turn to blue-ribbon rivers, which flow into the country’s largest high-altitude lake. Over your two days you’re sure to spot some of the region’s famed wildlife, including grizzly bears, heavy-bearded bison, eagles, horned elks and prairie dogs. Our Superior accommodation option is within touching distance of possibly Yellowstone’s most famous attraction, Old Faithful. Erupting every eighty minutes, it’s a sure crowd-pleaser.
Stay: Canyon Lodge & Cabins (Standard) or Old Faithful Snow Lodge (Superior)
Ranch stay, Helena
Continue to Helena and a three-night stay in a traditional ranch. Our Superior option, tucked away in the forested mountains of Montana’s Bitterroot valley, is a member of the Relais & Chateaux group offering gourmet dining and an exhaustive range of outdoor pursuits including nature safaris, archery, fly-fishing, horseback rides and sapphire panning. Similarly, our Standard option – the wonderfully named Rocking Z Ranch – offers the chance to embrace the Wild West ethos with everything from lasspoing and wilderness horse rides to guided hikes in search of local wildlife.
Stay: Rocking Z Ranch (Standard) or Triple Creek Ranch (Deluxe)
Meals: B L D
Drive on to Whitefish and your next accommodation choice. Located in a glacial valley dotted with alpine lakes and streams, The Lodge at Whitefish Lake is perfectly poised for the 30 minutes’ drive to Glacier National Park. Relax in the spa or by your own log fire and try your hand at the lodge’s numerous winter sports, from skiing to ice-skating. During your stay, be sure to drive the scenic ‘Going-to-the-Sun-Road’ through the national park’s centre to spot wandering grizzlies and reach breathtaking views and meandering hiking trails. Alternatively, book into the Grouse Mountain Lodge for superb summertime hiking and golf and the same ease of access to Whitefish Mountain's fresh-powder skiing and snowboarding in winter.
Stay: Grouse Mountain Lodge (Superior) or The Lodge at Whitefish Lake (Superior)
Head west to Coeur D’Alene in the Idaho Panhandle. Here, our Superior north-shore resort looks out over manicured parks to the town’s lake. Evening ambles down waterside boardwalks reward walkers with impressive sunsets over the lake, itself ideal for trying your hand at stand up paddleboarding.
Stay: Springhill Suites by Marriott Coeur d'Alene (Standard) or Coeur d'Alene Resort (Superior)
As you make your way to the coast, drive through Washington State to the foothills of the Cascade Mountains. Your destination is Sun Mountain Lodge, ideal for exploring its surrounding valleys or simply lounging in a hot tub. From here, take to the scenic byways of the Cascades Loop, which combine scenic views with ambling walks.
Stay: Sun Mountain Lodge, Washington (Superior)
Driving through the mountains will bring you to Seattle, one of America’s most up and coming cities. Drop off your hire car before making your way to your chosen hotel. Sip on an artisan latte or microbrew and summit the Space Needle in the 1990s birthplace of grunge rock. Now, the city’s better known for its world-class art galleries and museums including the Pacific Science Center and the Science Fiction Hall of Fame. Known as ‘The Emerald City’ due to its abundance of evergreen trees, Seattle also enjoys views to the Olympic Mountains to the west and their Cascades counterparts to the east.
Stay: Hotel Max (Superior) or Hotel Ändra (Superior)
