In between luxury stays among Hobart’s mountain-framed charms, this exploratory cruise takes in all the natural wonders of Tasmania. And, although you’ll visit otherwise-inaccessible wilderness regions, you’ll travel in small-yacht style, with drinks-paired, gourmet dining and excursions led by naturalist experts included throughout. You’ll enjoy gentle hikes on pink clifftops, relax on some of the world’s finest beaches, kayak on azure bays and spot everything from kangaroos to wallabies. There’s even wine and cheese tastings alongside archaeologist-led tours of the island’s centuries-old history.

Day by day itinerary

Days 1-2
Depart UK

Before your flight to Australia, you’ll begin your trip in style with complimentary airport lounge access.

Days 3-4

After touching down, you’ll be met by a private driver who’ll see you to your luxury, high-concept accommodation. Here, each room comes with original artwork, a tablet and a balcony-with-a-view, while the gourmet restaurant and bar – one of the city's finest – offers degustation dining, gin tastings and cooking demonstrations. You'll even be treated to a complimentary tour of the harbour from one of the resident 'storytellers'. And, with the hotel set right on the waterfront, it’s also perfectly placed to explore further. Today, Hobart’s Georgian architecture is given over to everything from craft-beer bars to a selection of superb museums on the town’s colonial past. This is Australia’s second-oldest city after all. There are also some superb walks among Hobart’s spectacular backdrop – the 1,300-metre-high Mt. Wellington.

Today you’ll board the luxurious Coral Discoverer, settling into your contemporary stateroom to enjoy full-board dining, with gourmet meals accompanied by included beers and showcase wines. The Australian and New Zealand crew will also welcome you to the cocktail bars, workout area and expansive Sun Deck, as you cruise along the River Derwent, enjoying sunset drinks paired with Tasmanian cheeses and fresh Bruny Island oysters. As is the beauty of small-ship cruising, you’ll enjoy impeccable service alongside a flexible itinerary, with your captain tailoring your route to make the best of the weather. Day 6
Woodbridge/Recherche Bay

You’ll begin today with a tasting tour of Australia’s only organic sheep cheesery before learning about the island’s underwater life at the Woodbridge Marine Discovery Centre. There’s also a trip along the Huon River to Franklin, the region’s oldest town. Here, one of its famous carpenters will take you through the Wooden Boat School before you continue to the beautiful Recherche Bay. Reached by a tender boat trip, creek cruises and optional ranger-led walk will lead you among a land of jagged peaks and old-growth forests.

Days 7-8
Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area

Docking at Port Davey, you’ll be treated to an unchartered wilderness that’s otherwise accessible only via a charter flight or seven-day hike. Here, endless sheltered bays hide a stunning array of endemic marine life, which you’ll spot on a kayak trip on Bathurst Harbour and tender boat rides through the ‘Narrows’. A walk along Balmoral Hill Track will also bring you Melaleuca, a remote village of friendly locals whose rural surrounds are host to orange-bellied parrots. There’s also an intriguing human history here, too, with remains found in caves that date back some 20,000 years.

Day 9
Adventure Bay

Cruising along Bruny Island’s national-park-dotted coast, you’ll make a stop at the country’s longest continually staffed lighthouse. You’ll also visit the Friars – a famed collection of jagged dolerite rocks home to a colony of Australian fur seals. A tender boat trip will also showcase the region’s nesting seabirds and the golden sands of Adventure Bay – the chance to relax, swim or kayak. Then, staying on Bruny Island, there’s everything from guided walks and visits to 19th-century whaling station ruins to Tasmanian wine tastings and stops at the Bligh Museum of Pacific Exploration. Built from convict-made bricks, it’s host to artefacts from the likes of James Cook and Matthew Flinders.

Day 10
Wineglass Bay/Maria Island

You’ll be greeted at Freycinet Peninsula by the great, pink granite peaks of the Hazard Mountains. Surrounded by sparkling bays and backdropped by eucalypt forest, it all makes for spectacular guided hikes and beach walks. Then, it’s on to the rugged cliffs and secluded coves of Maria Island. A true wildlife paradise, it’s host to everything from kangaroos and wallabies to cute pademelons and, yes, Tasmanian devils. You’ll also visit Darlington for an insight into life of the early settlers at a restored 17th-century convict penitentiary. A guided walk will also see you to the famous Fossil Cliffs, a painted masterpiece formed from mineral-rich water erosion.

Stay: Coral Discoverer (Superior)

Day 11
Tasman National Park/Port Arthur

Cruising with dolphins and albatross beside the 300-mretre-high sea cliffs of Tasman National Park, you’ll watch as giant sea stacks pierce through the ocean and fur seals haul out onto rocky shores. It’s an atmospheric route that brings you to Australia’s most evocative convict site – Port Arthur. It’s a great sandstone tumble of stern, 19th-century structures that once housed Britain’s worst criminals. Here, a tour with the resident archaeologist will bring you behind the scenes to private collections and historic buildings not accessible by the public.

Stay: Coral Discoverer (Superior)

Day 12

Cruising along the River Derwent, you’ll arrive back in Hobart for a final night. It’s the perfect, relaxing end to your cruise, with the chance to taste your way through the city’s gourmet restaurant scene or tour its superb, if poorly titled, Museum of Old and New Art. Alternatively, simply get lost in the golden sandstone of Battery Point and the bright verdure of the Botanical Gardens.
