Day by day itinerary
Chiang Rai & Pakbeng
On arrival in Chiang Rai, transfer to your hotel and join your group of fellow travellers and tour leader for a welcome briefing to prepare for your Mekong boat journey. Cross the border into Laos for a tranquil cruise along the upper Mekong on your private wooden barge. Soak up the relaxing atmosphere on the way to your remote but comfortable riverside lodge.
Stay: Laluna Resort, Phetsokxai
Continue to float down the Mekong River, stopping to admire the Buddha effigies at Pak ou Caves on the way, to the captivating town of Luang Prabang. Savour a traditional Lao breakfast and French coffee at a local eatery, then discover ornate monasteries and museums and get to know the locals with a game of petanque.
Be sure to rise early to witness hundreds of orange robed monks lining the town’s streets in the absorbing alms collection ritual. Next, visit the beautiful Kuang Si Falls before learning to cook Lao-style at a fun cooking class. You will have ample free time for independent exploring of the beguiling Luang Prabang.
Stay: Sala Prabang
Fly to the serene riverside capital and explore Wat Pha That Luang, Wat Sisaket and the iconic Patuxai Monument. At the interactive COPE centre, gain a valuable insight into the problems UXOs, unexploded mines and bombs, have caused in this peaceful land and what this fantastic organisation is doing to help. Enjoy free time to uncover the city on your own and relax with a drink at an outdoor cafe as the sun sets over neighbouring Thailand.
The next day includes a stop at a local coffee shop to taste traditional Lao coffee, visits to Wat Sisaket, Wat Haw Phra Kaew and Patuxai, and a free afternoon for shopping or relaxing. Finish your stay in Laos at a traditional Lao Baci ceremony in a local home, then savour delicious Lao 'jaew' dips at a local dinner feast. On your last day, enjoy free time until your departure transfer.
Stay: Mercure Vientiane
Fly to Phnom Penh. Enjoy a fun cyclo ride from your hotel to the Royal Palace and the Silver Pagoda. Reflect on Cambodia's tragic past with visits to the Tuol Sleng Museum and Killing Fields, before touring the central market.
Stay: The Frangipani Royal Palace Hotel & Spa
A drive on an ancient Khmer highway, travelling north through the Cambodian countryside, passes farmers driving oxen through paddy fields. In the town of Skuon, you may like to join the Khmers and sample the local delicacy - fried spider, before you head to the pre-Angkorian ruins of Sambour Prei Kuk.
Stay: Sambor Village Hotel
Glide across Tonle Sap Lake by boat before heading to Siem Reap, your base for exploring the temples of Angkor. Walk through the jungle in darkness to come upon the sun rising over the glorious temples at Angkor, a vision you'll never forget, then enjoy a local breakfast.
Experience a unique monk blessing ceremony before heading to the atmospheric tree-covered Ta Prohm. Venture to the remote Boeng Mealea temple then visit a landmine museum and a village producing palm sugar, and in the evening, feast on a hearty farewell dinner. On your last day, enjoy free time until your departure transfer.
