The South African province of KwaZulu-Natal is perhaps the most dramatic and varied in the country, and with Durban so well served by international flights, it makes an easy and rewarding trip in its own right, especially tempting if this is not your first time in the country.
Those who visit will find the stark and stunning Drakensberg Mountains, the emotive battlefields of Isandlwana and Rorke's Drift, some of the country's best private game reserves, the coastal dune forests and unspoiled beaches of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park (formerly Greater St Lucia Wetland Park), and the many resort towns that line the Indian Ocean around Durban.

Day by day itinerary
London - Durban
Fly overnight from London to Durban.
Arrive at Durban International Airport and collect your hire car on arrival. Spend the day at the beautiful Oyster Box Hotel, which stands majestically on the Umhlanga beachfront overlooking the Indian Ocean and the iconic lighthouse. Whilst staying at the Oyster Box Hotel, enjoy the spa, eat freshly-caught seafood at one of its fantastic restaurants, or spend the day on one of Durban's exquisite and pristine beaches.
Stay: Oyster Box, KwaZulu-Natal (Deluxe)
This morning drive towards the Drakensberg Mountains, located approximately two to three hours from Durban.
The Drakensberg is one of South Africa’s prime eco-tourism destinations and a well-deserved World Heritage Site. In this spectacular mountain range you can enjoy the ultimate freedom of great open spaces in a world of gigantic peaks and buttresses, where eland pick out paths along towering sandstone cliffs and vultures soar above crystal-clear rivers and remote hidden valleys.

The name Zulu (which means Heaven) aptly describes the rolling expanses, mist-clad hills and traditional settlements of the Zululand region.
Enjoy two nights at Isibindi Zulu Lodge or opt for the highly recommended Fugitives’ Drift, the latter one being acclaimed for its battlefield tours to Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift. Since establishing the lodge in 1989 until his death in 2007, David Rattray thrilled visitors with his knowledgeable, thought provoking and often emotionally charged depictions of the Anglo-Zulu War. His legacy lives on through the team he put in place, with his wife Nicky and her staff setting the benchmark for heritage tourism in South Africa - they are simply the best storytellers you are ever likely to meet.
