Pairing adventure with relaxation, this comprehensive route showcases the spectacular natural world of Australia’s tropical northeast. Bookended by a pair of luxury beachfront stays, you’ll escape to an eco lodge in the Daintree Rainforest before boarding a full-board cruise of the Great Barrier Reef. Your small-ship route will see you leave the crowds behind to snorkel, scuba and enjoy glass-bottom boat tours of pristine reefs and secret islands. Back on land, you’ll have the use of a hire car throughout to explore at your own pace, from jungle treks to hidden-beach escapes.
Day by day itinerary
Begin with complimentary airport lounge access before your flight out to Australia.
Flying into Cairns, you’ll pick up your hire car at the airport to make the coastal drive north, sweeping along golden crescents backed by cragged verdure to arrive at Port Douglas. Here, you’ll settle into your boutique accommodation – the town’s only hotel with beach and ocean views. And, they’re stunning vistas taken full advantage of by private balconies, tiered pools and a Jacuzzi spa. While you’ll want to relax with the next-door palm-fringed white sands and sunset bars, there’s also plenty of opportunity to explore with the use of your hire car. Choose between snorkel trips, national-park walks and bohemian enclaves.
Stay: Peninsula Boutique Hotel, Port Douglas (Superior)
Continuing north, you’ll head into the depths of the Daintree Rainforest to stay at its only boutique accommodation. Your private eco-lodge – one of just 15 – is set right on a jungle-cloaked lagoon; the perfect setting for spa treatments, complimentary pre-dinner drinks and the morning birdsong. You’ll also be able to explore the surrounding wilderness on kayak trips, snorkelling excursions and evocative walks, with a private waterfall among the highlights. As you go, keep your eyes out for everything from tree kangaroos and pretty kingfishers to brightly coloured frogs and geckoes. There’s also an intriguing Aboriginal heritage to take in.
Stay: Daintree Eco Lodge & Spa (Superior)
Great Barrier Reef Cruise
Dropping your car back in Cairns, a private transfer will see you to welcome drinks aboard the exclusive Coral Expeditions II; with just 22 rooms, it’s the ideal size for exploring the Great Barrier Reef. You’ll start with Cooktown’s 19th-century architecture and kangaroo-dotted botanic gardens before a snorkel trip over a desert-island reef. Then there’s the lesser-visited Outer Barrier Reef and the postcard-perfect Lizard Island where you’ll hike up to a stunning lookout before snorkelling over giant clam gardens. Throughout, you’ll enjoy everything from glass-bottom boat trips, snorkelling and optional scuba dives to gourmet beach barbecues, rainforest treks and presentations from the onboard marine biologist.
Stay: Coral Expeditions II (Superior)

After picking up your hire car following a private transfer, you’ll drive up the coast to your luxury bungalow at Kewarra Beach. Tucked away in the old-growth rainforest, each timber-accented offering features a private balcony that takes in tropical views and points towards the resort’s very own beach. And, from swimming pools and a superb spa to curated gardens and a gourmet beachfront restaurant, it’s the perfect relaxing end to your trip. Making use of your hire car, you might also want to head further afield with a day trip to the Atherton Tablelands – a land of rolling patchwork fields dotted with reaching mountains and waterfall-fed lakes.
Stay: Kewarra Beach Resort & Spa (Superior)
