Tromso

Visit Tromso

Introduction

Tromso, the ‘Capital of the North', is a lively university town surrounded by mountains, fjords and islands. This extremely likable and walkable city has for many years been the jumping off point for Arctic expeditions and adventures, and continues to be a hub for tailor-made travel.

But it's well worth spending a day or two days here first, taking in sights such as the world's northernmost botanical gardens, which contains Arctic and alpine plants from around the world, and the Polar Museum. Taking the Fjellheisen cable car up Storsteinen mountain is another popular activity, with fine panoramic views across the city from the top. Back in town there are plenty of good places to eat, drink and be merry, and to make new friends with the welcoming locals.

Tromso is the gateway to a region where the Northern Lights illuminates the night during winter, twisting and turning in brilliant shades of blue, green and yellow against a starry sky. In summer, travellers can hike in the coastal mountains, kayak inland rivers or among skerries in the Norwegian Sea, and fish for cod, halibut and salmon in those same, chilly Atlantic waters. Playing a round of golf at the world's northernmost 18-hole course under the Midnight Sun is another possibility.
