Yellowknife

Visit Yellowknife

Introduction

Yellowknife is the capital of the Northwest Territories and got it's name from the colour of tools made by Dene First Nations people. Gold mining brought settlement to the city as well as prosperity until the 1980s, while the discovery of diamonds in 1991 has restarted the trend.

Old Town

Seek out the frontier experience in Yellowknife's oldest restaurant - Wildcat Café - and enjoy a lovely meal in the log cabin with 1930s decor. Your Yellowknife tour should include a walk around Old Town and make sure you check out Bush Pilot Monument for views of the city. Finish off your tour in Downtown to unwind.

Lakes and trails

Yellowknife can be used as a base to explore its many surrounding water bodies. You can't miss fishing in Great Slave Lake from Yellowknife Bay. Follow trails around Frame, Niven or Range Lake or start your drive along the Ingraham Trail to explore Fred Henne Territorial Park. And get your cameras ready for a visit to Cameron Falls. Or sunbathe on the sandy beaches in Long Lake during the summer. While there check out the Folk on the Rocks Festival featuring music from northern, southern and tribal bands for you to enjoy.

Culture

Discover the aboriginal history of Yellowknife in the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre. And while visiting Yellowknife you should check for events at the Northern Arts and Cultural Centre. This theatre hosts live performances and will round off your trip nicely.
