Historic sites & must sees

Philadelphia is well known for its cultural heritage, which is reflected in its historic architecture and plethora of fascinating museums, from world-class art and design to science. The city's famous Parkway Museum District is where you'll find the majority of them, conveniently located close to each other allowing visitors to see the best of the city's arts and culture in a single day. What's more, you can also find some of the city's most famous sites here, including Robert Indiana’s LOVE statue and the Swann Memorial Fountain. But, no trip to Philadelphia is complete without visiting the iconic Rocky Statue and the 'Rocky Steps' for a snap at the top, originally created for a scene from the iconic Rocky III, who is now celebrated as the city's favourite fictional son. Similarly, the city's famous Liberty Bell draws in visitors from across the world. Originally ringing in the tower of Independence Hall (then known as Pennsylvania State House) from 1753, it is now a prominent symbol of American independence and is a must-see for those not only looking to learn about the bell itself, but for the role it played in the history of both Philadelphia and the USA.

Parks and gardens

As a walking city, hiring a car is not essential. In fact, you can walk within the central area of the city from east to west within an hour. But, away from the tree-lined streets and neighbourhoods, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy the fresh air in Philadelphia. While it may not have New York's Central Park or Chicago's Millennium Park, at over 2,000 acres and home to miles of walking and cycling trails, in Fairmount Park it quietly featuring the largest landscaped public park in America, right in the heart of the city. It features endless woodland paths, adventure courses and wetlands all within city limits.

Additionally, one of the most popular outdoor tourist attractions is Longwood Gardens. Although not technically in Philadelphia, these gardens are close enough to be a perfect scenic day trip from the city. With over 1000 acres of flower gardens and meadows, Longwood Gardens are stunning at any time of year, particularly during autumn when the explosion of colours are a sight to behold.

Dining & shopping

Philadelphia's neighbourhoods perfectly reflect the ethnic diversity of its early settlers. Similarly, when it comes to food, Philadelphia's specialities can trace their routes all around the world – but crucially they remain unmistakably unique. Aside from its most authentic food – the Philly cheesesteak – you'll have plenty of choice, from a traditional hoagie to a soft Philly pretzel and the regional party staple, tomato pie.

All across Philadelphia, the city is overflowing with an endless choice of dining options, serving mouthwatering local and international delicacies. Whether that means a gourmet food truck in a quaint side street, or an indulgent dinner at one of the city's best restaurants with blinding views of the Delaware River. Then there's the Reading Terminal Market — one of America's oldest and largest public markets. For over 130 years, the indoor food hall and marketplace has featured dozens of family-owned vendors, offering an impressive selection of food and drinks.

You'll also be spoilt for choice when it comes to shopping. With everything from high-end fashion in the likes of Rittenhouse Square, to department stores like Macy's and Boyds, there is something for all tastes and budgets. What's more, since clothing and shoe sales are tax-free, there's no better place to fill your suitcase with shopping than in Philadelphia.
