India's princely state

Visit Rajasthan

Introduction

Rajasthan was once a land of royalty and today revels in its regal past. Scores of forts and palaces loom from the arid desert sands, along with cities as colourful as their brightly swathed locals, who fill the streets in dazzling fabric outfits.

Rajasthan's city greats

The ‘pink city’ of Jaipur is one of pastel-hued buildings, palaces, forts and finely carved temples, while ‘blue’ Jodhpur – a labyrinth of medieval lanes framed by a tumble of blue-washed buildings – is dominated by the spectacular Mehrangarh Fort. Then, flung far out in the great Thar Desert, the sandstone citadel of Jaiselmer is straight from Aladdin’s Agrabah and serves as the starting point for myriad desert adventures. And, if all that wasn't enough, Udaipur, with its tranquil lakeside setting, white marble palaces and beautiful gardens, is India’s at its romantic best.

Our Rajasthan holidays take in most if not all of these incredible cities, taking in their architectural wonders and showcasing their colourful, often chaotic appeal. It's a real feast for the senses, but if it all becomes too much you can rely on the region's palatial hotels – many of which are themselves the former home of kings and queens – to provide a wonderfully relaxing end to even the busiest days.

Tigers of Ranthambore

While Rajasthan's cities are all hustle and bustle, its natural world is just as remarkable. As a standard bearer for conservation in India, Ranthambore National Park is the place to spot wildlife in the region. Expect a superb range of accommodation, from simple but comfortable camps to stunning luxury jungle lodges, and the chance to head out in the company of expert rangers to seek out sambar deer, jackals and Royal Bengal tigers amid its dense jungle and crumbling ruins.

Elsewhere, there's the chance to see India's other big cat species at the wonderfully remote JAWAI Leopard Camp. Here, guests have the chance to pair wilderness walks in the company of a resident naturalist, with gourmet dining experiences and infinity-pool relaxation, far off the beaten track. Speak to our specialists about the options available.
