Luxurious Victorian elegance in New Zealand’s largest private historic residence
Food & wine | History & culture | Honeymoon | Relaxation
Built in 1895 for Sir Heaton Rhodes, Otahuna Lodge is a stylish and elegant Victorian mansion set among beautiful manicured gardens on the outskirts of Christchurch on New Zealand's stunning South Island. Just minutes from the city, this luxury lodge offers peace, quiet and tranquility, refined personal service and sophisticated cuisine in an idyllic rural setting.
Each of the seven guest suites at Otahuna Lodge is an oasis of style and comfort, featuring luxury fabrics and furnishings, spacious bathrooms and a unique character and charm that fits perfectly with the history of the house. The lodge's two master suites are particularly impressive and include Sir Heaton Rhodes' former bedroom, which makes up part of the grand, four-room Rhodes Suite. The second master suite – the Verandah Suite – boasts a 14m verandah with views across the Canterbury Plains.
Cuisine at Otahuna Lodge aims to celebrate the very best of seasonal New Zealand produce, with a number of ingredients grown locally on the Otahuna Estate. Simple, strong flavours and beautiful presentation characterise an ever-changing seasonal menu that makes dining at Otahuna Lodge an absolute pleasure. Guests at the property can enjoy a range of culinary experiences including cooking classes and seasonal foraging.
In the lodge's old game house, guests will find the wine cellar – a homage to some of New Zealand's finest wines. A particular emphasis is placed on those from the surrounding Canterbury region.
The lodge features a wonderful outdoor swimming pool, jacuzzi and tennis court, but it's the 118-year-old gardens that are the real star of the show and are recognised as 'A Garden of National Significance' by the New Zealand Gardens Trust.
Otahuna also makes the perfect base for exploring the gorgeous Canterbury Region, with fly-fishing, golf, heli-touring, hiking and cycling all available. There's also the chance to visit some of the region's vineyards to see where the wine from the lodge's cellars is produced.
