Location
The Headwaters Eco Lodge is beautifully situated at the northern end of Lake Wakatipu – New Zealand’s third-largest lake – in the peaceful village of Glenorch, framed by towering, snow-capped mountains and native beech forest. In fact, the landscapes here have featured in several famous films, including The Chronicles of Narnia, The Hobbit, and Lord of the Rings. This area is a true nature lover’s paradise, ripe with opportunities for hiking, kayaking and horseback riding. It’s a gloriously scenic 45-minute drive from Queenstown, often described as New Zealand’s ‘adventure capital’.
Accommodation
There are 14 cosy, boutique chalets (with one bedroom and two bedroom configurations available) at The Headwaters Eco Lodge, decorated in a rustic-chic style and adorned with original New Zealand artworks. Expect ultra-comfortable king size beds, elegant country-style furnishings and an ensuite bathroom with complimentary premium toiletries and a walk-in rainfall shower. Each chalet also features a private verandah where you can relax with a tea, a coffee or a glass of wine while taking in the fabulous mountain views. There’s a strong emphasis on sustainability, too, with eco-friendly materials, solar-powered energy and a comprehensive water recycling system in place.
Dining
The talented team of chefs at The Headwaters Eco Lodge produce inventive, artfully presented dishes that make use of fresh, locally sourced produce – including fruits and vegetables from the lodge’s gardens and state-of-the-art glasshouse. Seasonal menus are complemented, of course, by a carefully curated selection of New Zealand’s finest wines and craft beers. A bountiful breakfast is also freshly prepared every morning, including continental and cooked options aplenty.
Facilities
The main lodge building is a delightfully cosy and inviting space in which to relax, while the gardens invite you to stroll among stone-mosaic walkways and warm up by the outdoor fireplace. It’s also possible to treat yourself to a soothing massage, join a group yoga session, or book a range of excursions in the surrounding region, including the likes of guided hikes, kayaking, boat tours and horseback riding. The lodge also hosts monthly food and wine tastings, cooking classes and other themed cultural events.
