This eight-day tailor-made tour explores northern Norway's Arctic outposts from Andenes in Vesterålen to the Arctic capital, Tromso, with virtually guaranteed whale sightings and huge scope for other outdoor activities along the way.
Day by day itinerary
Fly with SAS via Oslo to Andenes, the northernmost point of the island of Andøya in Vesterålen and northern Norway's best base for whale-watching. Check in for two nights at Hotell Marena, the newest hotel in town, with all rooms named after Norwegian fairy tales. Besides the attraction of the world's largest mammals, Andenes also plays host to a NATO air base, a lonesome lighthouse and a charming jumble of painted wooden boat sheds and nautical paraphernalia.
Stay: Hotell Marena
Today join Whalesafari Andenes on a whale-watching trip. At no other place in Norway does the edge of the continental shelf, a primary feeding ground for whales, lie as close to the shore as it does near Andenes. In fact, so prolific are sightings with Whalesafari Andenes (96% of its trips encounter whales) that you're offered a choice of your money back or a second safari for free should you not catch sight of a blubbery behemoth. Several species can be seen in the area, including fin whales, minke whales, pilot whales, humpbacks, orcas and sperm whales, the largest toothed whales in the world. The tour also includes a guided tour of the Whale Centre in Andenes and a visit to the Hisnakul nature centre.
Stay: Hotell Marena
Hamn I Senja
Collect your hire car, take the ferry to Gryllefjord and drive to Hamn I Senja where you'll stay for two nights. Hamn I Senja is a beautiful harbour and restored fishing hamlet ringed by fearsome mountains, on the outer edge of Norway's second-largest island, Senja. Accommodation is in comfortable rooms, suites and apartments - perfect bases for exploring this away-from-it-all and back-to-nature place. Local activities include boat trips, hiking, kayaking, deep-sea fishing, bird- and whale-watching and innumerable scenic drives.
Stay: Hamn I Senja (Superior)
Drive to Tromsø, Norway's largest city inside the Arctic Circle, drop off your hire car and check in for three nights at the Clarion Collection Hotel With, located on the waterfront near the Polar Museum, the Arctic Cathedral and the popular Mack Brewery, the northernmost brewery in the world, all of which can be explored at leisure over the next couple of days. A guided tour of the city as well as walking and kayaking trips can also be arranged. The hotel offers a complimentary light evening buffet between 6-9pm.
