Champion the Texan love of freedom with a luxury self-drive through sweeping open plains into the surprisingly green meadows of the state’s hill country. Along the way you’ll stay amongst San Antonio’s revolutionary history and Austin’s thriving music scene before experiencing the progressive culture of Dallas’s art galleries. You’ll also realise your cowboy fantasies with the honkytonk bars and cattle drives of Fort Worth and stays in some of Texas’s most luxurious ranches, complete with a whole range of outdoors activities.
Day by day itinerary
Flying into Dallas airport, you’ll pick up your hire car at the airport to make the short drive to that gateway to the Wild West – Fort Worth. Watch the cattle drives and call into a rodeo before following your nose to the restaurants of Sundance Square.
Stay: The Worthington Renaissance Fort Worth Hotel (Superior)
On your second day, watch as the Texas plains rush by on your way to lively Austin. Roll into town to the thumping beat of the city’s lively music scene, best sampled in one of its quirky honkytonk bars. Be sure to call into the 19th century granite of the Texas State Capitol, the largest of its kind in the country. There are also the leafy sidewalks of the University of Texas campus, home to museums and public art. You’ll also be introduced to the fingerlickin’ world of gourmet food trucks serving everything from brisket to lobster.
Stay: Hotel Van Zandt, Austin (Superior)
A focal point of the Texas Revolution, San Antonio is home to several historic sites including The Alamo, the mission where a few hundred revolutionaries died defending against thousands of Mexican troops. There’s also the San Antonio National Historic Park where four Spanish frontier missions sit on an area of over 800 acres. Today, San Antonio is perhaps better known for its evocative river walks and European café culture.
Stay: Mokara Hotel & Spa, San Antonio (Superior)
You’ll be forgiven for thinking that you’ve left Texas as you drive through Hill Country’s winding meadows and wildflower-lined rural roads. Staying in the Spanish-style cabins of a Relais & Chateaux luxury ranch, you’ll ride, hunt or walk along miles of trails and meadows before enjoying the state’s only Forbes five-star restaurant. Once a family retreat, the Inn at Dos Brisas is now home to the second largest privately owned indoor riding arena in Texas, catering for novice and expert cowboys alike. If that’s not enough, there’s everything from stargazing and massages to fishing and golf to choose from.
Meals: Includes breakfast
Stay: The Inn at Dos Brisas, Hill Country (Deluxe)
Swap wooden beamed ceilings for marble floors at the Rosewood Mansion, a palatial hotel set in a quiet corner of Dallas’s uptown. It’s the perfect place to explore the city’s urbane culture best represented by the 68-acre Arts District and world-class restaurants, a considered contrast to the rough and ready Fort Worth. It’s also ideal for some last minute shopping, with the highest amount of malls per capita in the country. The city’s also home to some of America’s best-known sports teams including the Dallas Cowboys and Dallas Mavericks, and unique attractions such as the Sixth Floor Museum and the George W. Bush Presidential Library.
Stay: Rosewood Mansion on Turtle Creek, Dallas (Deluxe)
