An overnight flight brings you to Sri Lanka’s modern capital where leafy boulevards and lively shopping streets are a wonderful introduction to the country’s colonial charms. After settling into your hotel, you’ll have a day to explore at your own pace, or take the chance to relax and recover from your journey.

Swap Columbo’s big city bustle for Galle’s UNESCO-listed waterfront fort, gateway to a wonderful selection of nearby beaches as you head south along the coast with your driver guide. On day four, an expert-led guided tour will take you to the fort’s 17th century ramparts that were at one time the centrepiece of Dutch colonial rule. Visit the Dutch Museum and church and see intricate workmanship played out in delicate handmade lace and ebony carvings. Day five is left free to expore the surrounding areas, with the beaches of Unawatuna and Marissa just a short drive away.

Bentota
Return north along Sri Lanka’s palm-fringed coast to the popular resort of Bentota. As you check into your enchanting 170 year-old Heritage House you can look forward to four full days of rest and relaxation on the golden sands of its tranquil spot on this beautiful stretch of the coastline. With a magnificent outdoor pool, perfectly manicured tropical gardens and a dedicated massage gazebo, you’d be forgiven for staying put, but the daily services of your driver guide – up to a maximum of 40 kilometres a day – means you’ll have plenty of opportunities to get out and explore the local region’s Buddhist temples and colourful seaside communities.
