Day by day itinerary
Depart the UK
Following some included VIP airport-lounge relaxation, depart from London on an overnight flight to Sri Lanka.
On arrival into Colombo, a private transfer will bring you to your luxury hotel in Minuwangoda. Spend the rest of your day at leisure, relaxing by the swimming pool set amid beautiful landscaped gardens.
Stay: The Wallawwa Hotel, Negombo (Superior)
After breakfast, your private driver will take you north to Anuradhapura. As the capital of Sri Lanka from the 5th century BC to the end of the 10th century AD, it's now the most celebrated of Sri Lanka’s ancient ruined cities whose greatest treasures are its dagobas - towering brick stupas that were once the ceremonial focus of the city's thousands-strong monasteries. Perhaps the city’s most renowned relic, however, is the sacred Bo Tree. Said to have grown from a branch of the tree under which the lord Buddha gained enlightenment, it was planted 2,250 years ago and is the oldest historically authenticated tree in the world.
Stay: Ulagalla, Anuradhapura (Deluxe)
Sigiriya & Polonnaruwa
In the morning, leave for Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa. Your first stop will be at the Sigiriya Rock Fortress, which is a city based on a precise square model. The layout extends outwards from the centre of the palace complex, with the eastern and western axis directly aligned to it.
In the afternoon, visit Polonnaruwa, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that was the capital of Sri Lanka from the 11th – 13th centuries, and contains some spectacular statues. Lankatilaka, Tivanka and Thuparama are the most beautiful and largest Image Houses and Tivanka has the best example of frescoes from the Polonnaruwa period. Rankoth Vehera and Kirivehera are well preserved large stupas, and Gal Vihare – a rock shrine – has four Buddha statues, two seated, one standing and one reclining. Polonnaruwa was the medieval capital and was fortified with inner and outer moats and inner and outer walls. Also visit the Parakrama Samudra, a reservoir that's on the western side of the city.
Stay: Ulagalla, Anuradhapura (Deluxe)
Enjoy a leisurely breakfast, before heading for the east-coast beach resort of Trincomalee – one of the largest and safest natural harbours in the world. Known for its year-round sunshine, white-sand beaches and placid waters, it's an idyllic spot for sunbathing and snorkelling while several offshore wrecks make it a popular destination for scuba diving. And, between May and October, it's possible to spot blue whales as they make their way north through the krill-rich feeding grounds that mark the meeting point of Sri Lanka's warm coastal waters and the colder currents of the nearby continental shelf. You'll spend two nights at Jungle Beach Resort, where activities range from reef fishing and jet skiing to sailing trips off the coast of Kuchchaveli. The hotel is also well-placed for day excursions to the nearby Koneswaram temple and the hot springs at Kannya.
Stay: Jungle Beach Resort, Trincomalee (Superior)
Leaving Trincomalee, you'll travel to south to Passikudah and the wonderfully luxurious Uga Bay Resort. Here, you'll enjoy three days of pampered relaxation as you seek out the indulgences of the spa, join a cookery course or simply relax on the postcard-perfect beach, perhaps enjoying some of the included watersports before returning to gourmet barbecues or decadent private dining experiences.
Stay: Uga Bay, Passikudah (Superior)
A scenic three-hour drive will bring you to the Kandy, a lakeside city in Sri Lanka's verdant Central Highlands. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Kandy was the last stronghold of the Sinhalese Kings during colonial Portuguese, Dutch and British rule. Today, as the home to the Dalada Maligawa – the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic – it's among Sri Lanka's most important Buddhist centres while the impressive Royal Palace – Palle Wasala – is now home to the National Museum. And, as the centre of Sri Lankan arts, crafts, music and cultural heritage, colourful dance performances take place throughout the city on a daily basis.
Stay: The Kandy House, Kandy (Deluxe)
In the morning, leave the highlands behind and make your way to Colombo, where you will spend the final night of your luxury holiday. You'll be free to explore the leafy boulevards of Sri Lanka's bustling capital.
Stay: Residence, Colombo (Deluxe)
