Itinerary

Recommended for:
Escorted tour | Natural world | Rail journey | Wildlife

Your journey begins in Vancouver on Canada's west coast. Explore the sights of this multicultural city before boarding the Rocky Mountaineer train for a memorable journey through the mountains, visiting Whistler, Banff, Jasper, Lake Louise and the wilds of the North Cariboo. Choose to travel in SilverLeaf Service or upgrade to GoldLeaf Service or GoldLeaf Deluxe for an even more luxurious experience.

Day by day itinerary

Day 1
Depart UK/Arrive Vancouver

Board your day flight to Vancouver. After you arrive, make the easy journey into the city centre and check into your hotel. You will have the rest of the day free to explore the city's surrounds – we recommend stopping by Gastown, as well as the Waterfront, where you'll be able to marvel at the beautiful Canada Palace.

Stay: Sheraton Wall Centre (SilverLeaf Service) or Four Seasons Vancouver (GoldLeaf Service)

Day 2
Vancouver to Kamloops

After breakfast, you'll depart your hotel and transfer to the railway station. Board the Rocky Mountaineer for the start of your journey through the Rocky Mountains. As Vancouver is left behind, you'll pass through Fraser Valley and wend your way through the river canyons and thick forests, against the backdrop of the Cascade and Coast mountainscapes. You'll dip in and out of rock sheds as you whizz past Thompson River, and don't forget to keep an eye out for the jaw-dropping bridge over Hells Gate – an iconic sight of British Columbia. The day's train journey will end at Kamloops a city situated at the confluence Thompson River's two river branches.

Stay: Kamloops accommodation (SilverLeaf Service & GoldLeaf Service)

Meals: B L

Day 3
Kamloops to Banff

Today, you'll head east into the state of Alberta, as the Rocky Mountaineer winds through the Spiral Tunnels. These are an innovative solution to the problem of the area's steep ascent, and serve as an important part of Canada's longstanding railway heritage. Between empty lakeside shores, traditional ranches and gaping mountain passes, you'll see Craigellachie, home to the site of the Canadian Pacific Railway's last spike before completion. You'll also pass through Kicking Horse Canyon and Roger's Pass, both affording spectacular views.

In the evening, you'll arrive at Banff, and check into either a traditional lodge or the impressive Fairmont Banff Springs.

Stay: Banff Park Lodge (SilverLeaf Service) or Fairmont Banff Springs (GoldLeaf Service)

Meals: B L

Day 4
Banff

The morning is free to spend at your leisure, and come afternoon you'll receive an afternoon tour of Banff National Park and Banff itself. Visit the glacier-affected Bow Falls and Lake Minnewanka, as well as Hoodoos, a jagged set of rock formations.

Stay: Banff Park Lodge (SilverLeaf Service) or Fairmont Banff Springs (GoldLeaf Service)

Day 5
Banff

Having familiarised oneself with Banff the previous day, you'll be free to explore more of it as according to your taste. Whether it's the mineral pools at Upper Hot Springs, a cruise on Lake Minnewanka or a hike through Banff's renowned mountains, you'll be surrounded by natural beauty.

Stay: Banff Park Lodge (SIlverLeaf Service) or Fairmont Banff Springs (GoldLeaf Service)

Day 6
Banff to Lake Louise

Today you'll witness the famous Yoho National Park to Lake Louise route on a half-day tour. Be sure to charge your camera, as this is one of the most picturesque journeys in Canada. You'll pass Emerald Lake, the Spiral Tunnels and an unique natural bridge made from rock. In the afternoon, you'll arrive at Lake Louise, with a few hours to spend exploring the surrounds. Alternatively after check-in, you can simply relax at the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise hotel, taking advantage of its excellent provisions.

Stay: Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise (Superior)

Day 7
Lake Louise

Enjoy a free day in Lake Louise. There are a number of local activities that you can take part in, including canoeing and hiking, or feel free to relax in the peaceful, leafy surrounds.

Stay: Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise (Superior)

Day 8
Lake Louise to Jasper

Enjoy a sightseeing tour of the Banff and Jasper National Parks, including a visit to Icefields Parkway, where you can enjoy a ride on the Ice Explorer onto the Athabasca Glacier. The Columbia Icefield is one of the largest accumulations of ice south of the Arctic Circle, it's also one of the most accessible. Arrive into Jasper late this afternoon.

Stay: Lobstick Lodge (SilverLeaf Service) or Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge (GoldLeaf Lodge)

Day 9
Jasper Highlights Tour

Jasper National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the Canadian Rockies’ largest national park. Today you will enjoy a scenic half-day tour of some of the park’s natural attractions and rugged peaks, and perhaps catch a glimpse of the wildlife that calls this region home. The remainder of the day is free for you to explore more of Jasper independently.

Stay: Lobstick Lodge (SilverLeaf Service) or Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge (GoldLeaf Service)

Meals: B L

Day 10
Jasper to Quesnel

Rejoin the Rocky Mountaineer for the next leg of your journey through the Rockies. Leaving Jasper behind you'll travel north to the town of Quesnel, gateway to the North Cariboo. You'll pass through the Rocky Mountain Trench surrounded on either side by the soaring Rocky and Cariboo Mountains, see Mount Robson, the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies. Further highlights include the Yellowhead Pass and Moose Lake. Your day ends as the train passes through the town of Prince George and follows the route of the Fraser River into Quesnel.

Stay: Quesnel accommodation (SilverLeaf Service & GoldLeaf Service)

Meals: B L

Day 11
Whistler

The year round resort of Whistler is today's destination. From the desert-like landscapes of the Fraser Canyon through the rolling hills and seemingly never-ending ranchlands of the Cariboo Plateau to the river canyons and verdant farmland of the Pemberton Valley, the scenery is as impressive as it is varied. En route to Whistler you'll cross Deep Creek Bridge, one of the world's highest railway bridges, and travel along the shorelines of the glacier-fed Seton and Anderson Lakes.

Your Whistler hotel will be from one of the below depending on the level of travel service booked.

Stay: Delta Whistler Village Suites or Fairmont Chateau Whistler (SilverLeaf Service) or Fairmont Chateau Whistler or Four Season Whistler (GoldLeaf Service)

Meals: B L

Day 12
Vancouver

After a morning free to explore, you'll rejoin the Rocky Mountaineer for the last leg of your journey along the Sea-to-Sky Corridor back to Vancouver. You'll see the Cheakumus Canyon, the domed peak of Mount Garibaldi and the Brandywine Falls before the panoramic views of Howe Sound and the Coast Mountains herald your arrival. A light afternoon snack is included on board.

Stay: Holiday Inn & Suites (SilverLeaf Service) or Four Seasons Vancouver (GoldLeaf Service)
