About

Recommended for:
City | Lodges | Mountains | Natural world | Rail journey | Self-drive

Taking the Rocky Mountaineer experience to new heights, this journey pairs two days of on-the-rails indulgence with the sheer drama of a heli-hiking trip through the Canadian Rockies. The adventure begins in Vancouver before the train whisks you into the wilderness; enjoy glass-domed views, complimentary drinks and the best in seasonal gourmet dining as you head, via a night in Kamloops, to Jasper National Park. From there, an included transfer will bring you to your luxury mountain lodge for extraordinary heli-hikes on remote high-country terrain. With expert guides and included boots and poles, you’ll set out among winding river canyons and old-growth forests sprinkled with turquoise lakes and snow-dusted peaks. It’s then on to Banff for one final helicopter jaunt above its national park namesake before a dash across the plains to Calgary and your journey’s end. This route can also be made in reverse.

Day by day itinerary

Day 1
UK to Vancouver

After your day flight from the UK, arrive in Vancouver and transfer to your hotel. Vancouver's population, as well as its scenery, is sparklingly diverse, reflected in its endlessly varied food and drinks scene, from street food to excellent Japanese eateries and trendy coffee shops in Gastown. We recommend Blue Water Kitchen for a delicious Japanese dinner.

Stay: Georgian Court Hotel (SilverLeaf) or Fairmont Hotel Vancouver (GoldLeaf)

Day 2
Vancouver to Kamloops

Today you’ll board the glass domed carriages of the Rocky Mountaineer, enjoying breakfast cooked by Michelin-starred chefs in your iconic glass-domed train car. The superior GoldLeaf option also offers spectacular viewing platforms, ideal for taking in cascading waterfalls only reachable via train and traversing under the shadow of looming mountains. As you leave Vancouver’s city gems you'll head deep into the arid British Colombia interior before swapping dusty scenes for lush green farmlands and white-topped peaks. Dense cedar forests and winding river canyons take you to the imposing Coast and Cascade mountains as you enjoy lunch in the dining car, before you traverse over the awe-inspiring rush of Hell’s Gate and the steep rocks of the Thompson River. Finally head past the serene Kamloops lake to arrive at your hotel for this evening.

Stay: Kamloops hotel

Day 3
Kamloops to Jasper

Today enjoy a gourmet breakfast in your train cart as you continue north to Alberta, often heralded as Canada's most emblematic landscape, and rightly so. Marvel at the dramatic surrounds from the comfort of the train, from the serene North Thompson River to the unimaginably majestic heights of the Monashee and Cariboo Mountains, with the enormous zeniths of the Continental Divide in your eyeline as you enjoy a Michelin-star lunch. Highlights include the Rockies' highest peak, the imposing Mount Robson; the roaring falls of Pyramid Falls, only reachable this close via train; and the iconic Yellowhead Pass as you traverse into Jasper National Park’s birch-covered inlets and turquoise lakes.

Your rail journey ends this evening on arrival in Jasper as you take advantage of your hotel, Marmot Lodge, all outdoor hot tubs, saunas and cosy fireplaces, or, if you’ve chosen Gold Leaf, enjoy the delights of the iconic Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge. Relax in your lakeview room before indulging in one of the four onsite restaurants, from the super fresh seafood of Oka Sushi to the cosy lodge-style Moose’s Nook chophouse.

Stay: Marmot Lodge or Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge

Day 4
Jasper to Cariboos Lodge

After breakfast, you'll be transferred to the helipad and flown to the Cariboos Lodge, nestled among dense forests and snow-dusted expanse. Get kitted out in your provided boots and poles to prepare for your next few days of adventure before enjoying the delights of the lodge this afternoon, from spa massages to soaks in the outdoor hot tub. Enjoy complimentary drinks and nibbles in the cosy lounge before enjoying your included dinner – the lodge offers a whole host of options, from a Japanese buffet to Spanish paella and South Carolina barbecues, all expertly paired with fine wines from the well-stocked cellars.

Stay: CMH Cariboos Lodge

Days 5-6
Cariboos Lodge

Enjoy breakfast before your helicopter adventures over the next two days. You'll land on stunning landscapes before hiking mountain ridges and serene lakes, marvelling at everything from colossal glaciers to fluffy white powder-covered mountains. You'll hike between 1 and 15km daily – it's completely your choice – and makes indulging in the hotel's whirlpool and sauna feel extra well-earned. Enjoy picnic-style lunches before flying back to the lodge for relaxing tea breaks and delicious dinners.

Stay: CMH Cariboos Lodge

Day 7
Cariboos Lodge to Banff

After breakfast, head to the helipad for your final hike among the stunning scenery. Fly back to the lodge for lunch before you're transferred to Banff via the incredible Icefields Parkway where glaciers, cascading waterfalls, rock spires and lakes all vie for your attention. Explore Banff this evening and indulge in the plethora of cosy alpine-style restaurants – Eden and Chuck's Steakhouse are two of our recommendations.

Stay: Banff Park Lodge (SilverLeaf) or Rimrock Resort Hotel (GoldLeaf)

Meals: B L

Day 8
Banff

Today you've got an entire day to spend exploring Banff National Park. Perhaps head to the mineral pools at Upper Hot Springs, hike along the plethora of nearby mountain trails, cruise on the spectacular glacial Lake Minnewanka, or swim, fish and canoe around stunning lake shores. Don't miss a visit to Johnston Canyon, a gorge with two brilliant waterfalls along the popular trail from Bow Valley Parkway, where bubbles of water appear from a natural spring. Explore the old coalmine and ghost town in Bankhead on a short hiking trail from Lake Minnewanka Road, or head further into the mountainous wilderness where you may spot grizzly bear, caribou, moose, wolf and elk, as well as a variety of birds nestling in the forestry.

Stay: Banff Park Lodge (SilverLeaf) or Rimrock Resort Hotel (GoldLeaf)

Day 9
Banff to Calgary with helicopter tour

After breakfast, you'll take to the skies for a short but incredible adventure, soaring 2,300 metres above sea level over mountain vistas and waterfalls. It's a spectacular new way to immerse yourself in the Rockies before you're transferred to Calgary. Here, we've included a trip to Calgary Tower, a wonderful vantage point on for stellar views of the city. Tonight perhaps indulge in one of Calgary's excellent steakhouses – we particularly like Caesar's.

Stay: Delta Calgary Downtown or Hyatt Regency Calgary

Days 10-11
Calgary to UK

After breakfast, check out of your Calgary hotel before you head to the airport for your overnight flight, arriving back in the UK on day 11.
