Showcase the Canadian Maritimes at their very best as you take in both the highlights and lesser-known charms of New Brunswick on this scenic road trip. You’ll stay in such boutique fineries as Gothic revival cottages and 19th-century inns as a range of included excursions get right to the heart of the region. There’s everything from art gallery masterclasses and architect-led tours of Fredericton’s colonial heritage to whale watching excursions and afternoon tea on the Roosevelt’s favourite island getaway. You’ll also taste your way through the region’s foodie delights with garden-clad degustation dinners, craft brew tastings and champagne-paired caviar trips in fishing boats.

Day by day itinerary

Day 1
UK/Saint John

Your day flight will bring you to Saint John, New Brunswick’s second largest city. On arrival, you’ll pick up your hire car and make the 10 minutes’ drive to your delightful accommodation, a converted 19th-century mansion clad in pretty New England weatherboarding. Rest up with a cocktail in the mahogany-panelled lounge or head out to explore; the inn’s walking trails bring you out, through manicured gardens, to riverside walks.

Stay: Shadow Lawn Inn (Superior)

Day 2
Kingston Peninsula

Today you’ll be treated to the first of your gourmet foodie experiences, going behind the scenes of the region’s famous caviar industry. Departing aboard a fishing boat, you’ll head out from the Kingston Peninsula to watch as expert fishermen haul out giant sturgeon fish. As you go, you’ll learn about this prestigious trade and admire the region’s wild scenery, watching as riverbanks are carpeted in dense, evergreen forests. And, before the tour ends, you’ll enjoy a caviar tasting session, paired with champagne, of course.

Stay: Shadow Lawn Inn (Superior)

Day 3

Leaving the coast behind, head inland to New Brunswick’s charming capital – Fredericton. Famed for its rich cultural heritage, its attractions range from heavyweight art galleries and a grand, 200-year-old sandstone palace to reconstructed 19th-century villages and a pretty Gothic cathedral. You’ll take much of it in with a guided walk with local architectural historian, Peter Pacey. He’ll give you an insight into the grand designs behind Fredericton, with highlights including the stately government buildings and, dating back to the 1820s, the austere Barracks Square.

Stay: Quartermain House (Superior)

Meals: B

Day 4

Your artistic education will continue today with a guided visit to Beaverbrook Gallery. A mid-century gift from one Lord Beaverbrook, its exceptional collection hosts works by local artists alongside such international masters as Dalí, Freud and Turner. Your local guide will bring it all to life. You’ll then revert to form, with a tasting tour of the city’s foodie hotspots, enjoying everything from mid-eastern classics to hip innovations. It’s all washed down with locally brewed craft beverages. Along the way, you’ll learn how the region’s Acadian sensibilities have been influenced from cultures from all corners of the world.

Stay: Quartermain House (Superior)

Meals: B

Day 5
St. Andrew’s-by-the-Sea

Loop back to the coast to arrive at St. Andrew’s-by-the-Sea – one of North America’s best-preserved examples of colonial heritage. It’s a veritable treasure trove of stunning architecture, pretty gardens and beautiful scenery. This afternoon you’ll visit one of its highlights, Kingsbrae Gardens. Perched atop a hill overlooking the Passamaquoddy Bay, the gardens’ 27 acres of horticultural magnificence are host to more than 65 species of birdlife. It’s also the postcard-perfect setting for your evening meal. You’ll enjoy a tasting menu at Savour in the Garden, Kingsbrae’s fine-dining favourite where fresh, seasonal ingredients are showcased across award-winning dishes.

Stay: Treadwell Inn (Superior)

Meals: D

Day 6
St. Andrew’s-by-the-Sea

Today you’ll enjoy one of North America’s premier wildlife-watching experiences. Heading out onto the Bay of Fundy, you’ll sail into the summer feeding grounds of the endangered North Atlantic right whale. But, as one of just 12 species of cetaceans, you’ll be treated to a stunning diversity of marine life hidden among what are the world’s most extreme tides. Then, this afternoon at low tide, you’ll drive out across the ocean floor to visit the island residence of Sir William Van Horne. The visionary behind Canada’s railways, Sir William’s historic cottages and bathhouses are set among idyllically rural scenery.

Stay: Treadwell Inn (Superior)

Day 7
Campobello Island

On your last full day in Canada you’ll take to the seas once more with a water taxi ride out to Campobello Island. It’s an undiscovered gem where seals frolic in the waves, eagles soar overhead and island life goes on unperturbed. It’s the sort of idyll that has long attracted North America’s moneyed elite, with the Roosevelts particularly enamoured. You’ll visit their summer residence, a 34-room split-roof spectacle wrapped in green shuttering. It’s been immaculately preserved in all its 1920s charm and its accompanying cottage is the pretty setting for your afternoon tea, accompanied by a talk on the life of Eleanor Roosevelt. You’ll also enjoy strolls through its colourful, bird-filled gardens and hikes that bring you through spruce-fir forests to reach a shoreline of secluded coves and sandy beaches.

Stay: Treadwell Inn (Superior)
