History & culture | Natural world | Off the beaten track | Self-drive | Wildlife

Simply, this is your chance to head off Canada’s beaten track. Scenic drives through Manitoba's Provincial, National Parks and lakelands, rolling hills will see you between pioneer towns from Icelandic settlers and a pre-history that spans from the dinosaurs to First-Nations tribes. Then, alongside the city bustle of Winnipeg, you’ll also sweep travel north into the Arctic Circle to the outpost of Churchill to witness Polar Bears, and a collection of other polar wildlife.

Day by day itinerary

Days 1-2

After enjoying complimentary airport lounge access, board your flight to Canada. Arriving the same day, you’ll pick up your hire car at the airport and make the short journey to your hotel. A delightfully contemporary offering, it’s perfectly positioned right in the city centre. Winnipeg is the capital of the Canadian province of Manitoba. The city is well known for its numerous art galleries and cultural attractions.

The heart is The Forks, a historic site at the intersection of the Red and Assiniboine rivers, with warehouses converted to shops and restaurants, plus ample green space dedicated to festivals, concerts, and exhibits. Nearby, the Exchange District is known for its well-preserved, early 20th-century architecture. Visit the Canadian Museum for Human Rights or the Art Gallery, opening of QAUMAJUQ, home to the largest public collection of contemporary Inuit Art in the world. The Assiniboine Park Zoo is another attraction always worth a visit.

Stay: Inn at The Forks, Winnipeg (Superior)

Day 3
Winnipeg - Whiteshell Provincial Park

Today you travel east to Whiteshell Provincial Park. On route visit the Mennonite Heritage Village in Steinbach. A living museum, telling the story of the Russian Mennonites in Canada.

Rushing rivers, clear deep lakes and warm sandy beaches await you in Whiteshell Provincial Park. Numerous activities from hiking, biking, swimming to canoeing make this park a true outdoor paradise

Stay: Pinewood Lodge, Whiteshell (Superior)

Days 4-5
Whiteshell Provincial Park

Two full days are yours to explore this beautiful Provincial Park. Relax on one of the sandy beaches, hike one of the multiple trails or dive into the waters of one of the clear lakes. Experience the true Canadian Dream of relaxation and quietness.

Stay: Pinewood Lodge, Whiteshell (Superior)

Day 6
Whiteshell Provincial Park - Gimli

Your destination today is Gimli on the shores of Lake Winnipeg. Lake Winnipeg is the largest lake in Manitoba and ranks No. 10 in the world for largest freshwater lakes.

The charming town of Gimli offers beautiful long sandy beaches and is very proud of its Icelandic heritage.

Stay: Lakeview Gimli Resort, Gimli (Superior)

Day 7
Gimli - Hecla

Before continuing to Hecla, you may wish to visit the New Iceland Heritage Centre. Follow the shores of Lake Winnipeg northwards towards Hecla Grindstone Provincial Park. As Gimli, Hecla was once home to immigrants from Iceland. Hecla village tells the story of these early immigrants.

Explore this rich park rich in flora and fauna during a bicycle tour or a hike along the coastline of Lake Winnipeg.

Stay: Lakeview Hecla Resort, Hecla (Superior)

Day 8
Hecla - Riding Mountain National Park

Riding Mountain National Park sits atop the Manitoba Escarpment. The forested parkland stands in sharp contrast to the surrounding prairie farmland. The park is known for an abundance of wildlife.

Stay: Lakehouse Boutique Hotel, Riding Mountain National Park (Superior)

Days 9-10
Riding Mountain National Park

We recommend starting your day with a visit to the Riding Mountain Visitors Centre in Wasagaming. The Parks Canada staff always have the best tips where to go and what to do. Wildlife Watching is certainly one of the top activities within the park. Don’t miss visiting the Lake Audy Bison Enclosure, which holds a captive herd of approximately 40 bison.

Stay: Lakehouse Boutique Hotel, Riding Mountain National Park (Superior)

Days 11-12
Riding Mountain National Park - Winnipeg

After 10 exciting days in the prairies, todays last leg of your journey brings you back to Winnipeg. We highly recommend a side trip to Spruce Woods Provincial Park. Quite unexpected this park protects the only sandy desert in Manitoba. Shifting sand dunes are home to cactus which survive up to -40 Celsius in the winter times.
