Day by day itinerary
Day
1
Antananarivo
Arrive in the capital, often simply known as Tana, and transfer to your hotel.
Stay: Le Relais des Plateaux Hotel or similar
Days
2-4
Berenty Reserve
Fly to Fort Dauphin on the south-eastern coast. From here you'll transfer to Berenty Lodge, whose 12 air-conditioned bungalows offer direct access to the Berenty Reserve. The reserve was strictly protected for almost 30 years and today offers visitors some of the best opportunities to see lemurs up close. Often-seen species include ring-tailed lemurs, Verreaux's sifakas and red-fronted brown lemurs. Bird-watching, too, is excellent here, with endemic species such as giant and crested couas, Madagascar sparrow hawks and sooty falcons often spotted in the area. Your stay includes a visit to the Arembelo Ethnographical Museum and a night walk through the reserve's spiny forest, where torchlight can pick out the eyes of nocturnal lemurs.

Fort Dauphin
Spend the bulk of the day exploring the mountainous Andohahela National Park, remarkable for its three distinct habitats: dense tropical rainforest, dry spiny forest and, between the two, a unique transitional forest known for its endemic triangular palm. Wildlife here includes 15 species of lemur and a number of endemic bird species. Continue to Fort Dauphin where you'll spend the night.
Stay: Le Croix du Sud Hotel or similar

Days
7-9
Ankarafantsika National Park
Fly to Mahajanga and transfer to the lodge at Ankarafantsika National Park. The park is one of the last remaining sections of deciduous forest in Madagascar and the last refuge of several lemur and bird species. Coquerel sifakas are commonly seen in the day, while night walks can be rewarded with sportive, mongoose, western wolly and other nocturnal lemur species.

Masoala National Park
Fly to Maroantsetra where you'll spend the night before continuing to Masoala National Park, the largest on the island. Mountains draped in primary rainforest drop down to deserted beaches, protected marine parks and Antongil Bay, where humpback whales come to breed and calve. Chameleons and lemurs are commonly seen among the tall palisander trees, vines, ferns and orchids, and the park is the last refuge of the red-ruffed lemur. Your stay includes a trip to Nosy Mangabe, a small island reserve whose forests give sanctuary to the endangered aye-aye.
