About

Recommended for:
Activity adventure | Beach | Escorted tour | Expedition cruise | History & culture

This unique safari begins with four days cruising from island to island on a traditional motorised dhow, sleeping each night on a different deserted beach, safely ensconced in a comfortable eco-camp.

The final two nights will be spent at Ibo Island Lodge. Virtually undisturbed for a century and now nominated for UNESCO World Heritage status, Ibo Island is a beautiful and atmospheric place to finish your trip where you'll find ancient forts and centuries-old temples as well as mesmerising beaches and authentic cultural encounters.

Ibo Island Lodge is the island's premier accommodation. Made from two refurbished mansions each over a century old, the lodge makes for a memorable end to this castaway adventure.

Day by day itinerary

Day 1
Mogundula Island

On arrival in Pemba, you'll be met and transferred through the beautiful Quirimbas National Park to the small coastal town of Mucojo where you'll board your traditional motorised dhow. This form of transport is still used widely by the local community to travel between the islands so you're sure of a truly authentic experience as head to the pretty island of Mogundula, where you'll spend the next two nights. After being shown to your comfortable eco-tent, the rest of the day is free to swim and explore the island.

Stay: Mobile Eco-Camp, Mogundula Island (D)

Day 2
Mogundula Island

The second day of the tour is spent fully exploring Mogundula Island and it's surrounds. This part of the Quirimbas Archipelago is littered with secluded bays, lush coastal forests and thick mangroves, harboring a wealth of animal and birdlife. Spend some time with your exploring the many beaches and coves, away from other tourists and enjoy some spectacular snorkeling on the surrounding reefs.

Stay: Mobile Eco-Camp, Mogundula Island (B,L,D)

Day 3
Ulumbwa

Today you'll depart Mogundula Island and sail through the clear blue waters of the archipelago, exploring the many pristine coral reefs as you go. Your experienced dhow captain and guide will take you to seldom explored bays and introduce you to the traditions, customs and beliefs of the people who inhabit the region If the weather's set fare you'll make a stop at Rolas Island with its immaculate reefs and gorgeous white sand beach. Here you can spend some time swimming and relaxing before heading to the tiny village of Ulumbwa where you'll make camp for the night.

Stay: Mobile Eco-Camp, Ulumbwa.

Meals: Breakfast Lunch Dinner (B,L,D)

Day 4
Ibo Island

Your fourth day sees you depart Ulumbwa and head to Ibo Island, the Quirimbas Island's number one attraction. Recently nominated as a UNESCO World Heritage site, Ibo Island has a rich history that can be seen from the crumbling 15th century forts that litter the island. The island is a fascinating place to spend a few days with a wealth of history, culture and beautiful scenery at your disposal.

Stay: Ibo Island Lodge (B,L,D)

Day 5
Ibo Island

Do as much or as little as you choose as today is spent enjoying Ibo Island and its many attractions. Your guide will give you a full range of optional activities to choose from including guided nature walks, cultural tours, swimming and snorkeling.

Stay: Ibo Island Lodge (B,L,D)

Day 6
Departure

Depart Ibo Island by light aircraft as you return to Pemba for your onward flight.
