This short break sees you driving from Barcelona into the spectacular medieval charms of Girona’s cobblestone maze, based in a luxury hotel in the sprawling countryside with Costa Brava’s golden curves in the distance. You’ll have use of a hire car to explore this provincial capital which is flooded with history, with everyone from the Moors to the Romans and Visigoths having left their mark on its twisting laneways. It’s a destination that’s inspired the likes of Salvador Dalí whose great works are memorialised in the region’s Dalí Triangle, a trio of sites that remember the great artist’s life and works. And, top it all off with hiking or cycling the nearby trails and visiting the nearby volcanic and botanic parks, or simply relaxing poolside before enjoying gourmet Spanish gastronomy at the hotel's esteemed onsite restaurant.
Day by day itinerary
You’ll fly into Barcelona after making use of your included VIP airport lounge access that ensures a stylish start to your trip, before picking up your included hire car at the airport. After a picturesque drive through the Catalonian countryside, you’ll reach your hotel – the superb Camiral, where you’ll receive a VIP welcome with a bottle of local Cava. This contemporary Spanish design hotel is set in surrounds of endless rolling hills, with private poolside balconies and panoramic windows looking over the spectacular golf course. Inside, oak flooring, hand-painted tiles, and gilt-edged mirrors set the scene, with rain showers and pillow top mattresses providing the comforts. This evening, you’ll enjoy an included welcome dinner at the hotel’s 1477 restaurant, sampling dishes created by chef Ramón Simarro, who cooks to triple Michelin star standard. The gentle breeze from open French doors overlooking the poolside and distant greenery is a beautiful setting to enjoy sommelier-selected wines and dishes created with fresh, local ingredients – the rice with locally sourced Palamós prawns is particularly notable, according to Simarro himself.
Stay: Hotel Camiral, Girona (Deluxe)
Indulge in an included breakfast each day, and whilst the pool and golf course are tempting, you’ll want to head out and explore Girona, just ten minutes from the hotel. As the Spanish gateway into Northern Catalonia, Girona showcases a rich history across everything from Roman ruins to medieval fortifications. Successive Franco-Spanish grudges are remembered by its Old Quarter where Romanesque flourishes sit alongside Gothic grandeur – take it all in with a walk along the city’s watchtower-studded medieval walls, and in the Força Vella, you can trace Girona’s timeline back much further. Dating back over two millennia, much of this Roman fortress stands to this day with its hilltop vantage point commanding spectacular views. Further afield there are the full-bodied delights of the Empordà Wine Region along with the museums, theatres and castles of the Dalí Triangle.
On this trip, you'll get included entry to Dalí’s Gala Castle in Pubol, just half an hour from your hotel and next to some of the area’s most spectacular medieval villages. You’ll also get an included gourmet picnic, which includes Coca bread with Catalan-style tomatoes, hams, cheeses, desserts and local Cava. You might want to explore Girona further using the hotel’s bicycles – the Carrilet Greenway is a particularly scenic route; once a mountainous railway line, today it makes for gentle rides through the picturesque Catalan countryside, skirting fields and skipping over trestle bridges. And each day, you’ll return to the optional indulgences of your exclusive accommodation. There’s everything from a game on Spain’s most highly acclaimed golf course and poolside-bar relaxation to spa treatments and truly exquisite dining experiences. The lounge bar is a wonderful space for a pre or post dinner drink where the finest spirits go into crafting artisanal cocktails, complemented by range of classical bar dishes and seafood, while the casual pool bar is ideal for a juicy burger or fresh salad. There are also options for fishing, skydiving or horse-riding, all of which can be tailor-made to fit perfectly within your trip.
