This is a true tailor-made wilderness experience in the remote tundra of Arctic Canada, where your base is comprised of tents dwarfed by the icy surrounds – they serve as wonderful headquarters for exploration of some of the world's most far-flung Arctic wilds. You'll start in Pond Inlet, where craggy mountains frame picturesque fjords, before heading via an authentic Qamutik “wooden sled” to the Floe Edge Base Camp, greeted by expert guides who are on hand to help you explore the biodiverse perimeter that comes alive in spring, where whales, polar bears and walrus thrive. You'll spot breaching belugas, marvel at grandiose icebergs and observe huge numbers of migratory birds among the region's icy landscapes, framed by the roaring Arctic Ocean. Exploring comes in many forms, whether you want to kayak, hike or ski, and it's all done alongside colossal glaciers and endless icy expanse, affording wonderful photo opportunities round every corner. And, you'll get to explore historic Ottawa at the start and end of your trip, staying in five-star luxury featuring a swimming pool and award-winning restaurant.

Day by day itinerary

Day 1
UK to Ottawa

Start your journey in style with included VIP airport lounge access before boarding your flight to Ottawa. Upon arrival, you’ll head to your hotel for this evening, the stunning Fairmont Château Laurier. In the centre of downtown Ottawa, here, a regal elegance exudes throughout, with rooms that are adorned with sumptuous fabrics providing a luxurious but homely feel with fireplaces and cosy armchairs. Downstairs, an opulent dining room, sleek bar and sprawling indoor swimming pool are among the host of amenities. This evening perhaps enjoy a meal at Wilfrid’s restaurant, a beautifully opulent chandelier-adorned room, featuring the gentle melodies from the grand piano to accompany your meal. Or, head for an evening drink at the sleek lounge of Zoe’s, featuring an exquisite marble bar.

Stay: Fairmont Chateau Laurier, Ottawa (Superior)

Day 2
Ottawa to Pond Inlet

Today you'll start your Arctic adventure with an included flight to Pond Inlet via Nunavut’s remote capital of Iqaluit on Baffin Island, where houses lie sporadically among an icy expanse, framed by tundra valleys and snow-covered mountains that serve as the home of roaming Arctic foxes and caribou. You'll then reach Pond Inlet, a rugged but picturesque Inuit community. Here, you'll enjoy dinner by an enormous fjord, edged by looming mountains, glaciers, icebergs and narwhal-dense waters.

Days 3-8
Floe Edge Base Camp

Today, after breakfast, you'll head to the frozen splendour that is the floe edge. This mystical perimeter, often called the "life line", is comprised of land-fast ice that meets the Arctic Ocean's open waters, where enormous ice packs fall and rise with the tide. Wildlife converges accordingly along the changing edge, from walruses, seals and polar bears to breaching narwhals, bowhead and beluga whales and a huge bird population. Baffin Island, on which your camp will be based, is a true showcase of the best of this area, with grandiose peaks calved from Greenland peppering the vast, icy wilderness.

An authentic Qamutik “wooden sled” brings you to the floe edge, lying on the border between the glaciers along the sea and the open ocean. This can only be done in May and June due to the way the icebergs act at this time of year, and you'll be guided by highly qualified Black Feather and Inuit guides, creating a base camp, according to the weather, which will serve as your hub for the next few days. Spend your days spotting the tusks of narwhals peeking from the icy waters along the edge during their annual migration, seeing polar bears roaming among the Arctic wilds, and observing the murres and black black-legged kittiwakes of Bylot Island, a migratory bird sanctuary. You'll explore the glacier-clad mountains of Baffin Island and kayak along the vast sounds of Sirmilik National Park, or perhaps you'd prefer to ski among the white expanse – it's all included in the itinerary, alongside wonderful photography opportunities of the emerging wildlife among the icy glaciers and grandiose icebergs. And bring an eye mask, because here, the sun never sets.
