Itinerary

Recommended for:
Activity adventure | City | History & culture | Natural world | Off the beaten track | Wildlife

There are fewer than 400 spirit bears left in the wild and seeing them catching salmon in their natural environment is certainly a thrill. Other wildlife in the area includes grizzly and black bears, mountain goats, eagles, wolves, cougars and pods of orca and humpback whales. This itinerary is based on 3 nights at Spirit Bear Lodge but there are also 4 and 5 night packages available.

The joy of spirit bear lodge is that each month has a distinct season and feel. In June and July you'll see grizzly's with cubs as they seek out the high protein sedge grass, humpbacks are also a frequent sight as they hug the coastline foraging for herring and mackerel. August sees the bears anticipating the arrival of the great salmon run as they gather in large numbers around the river mouths. August is also the month when the elusive Spirit Bear is often more visible. September brings the full force of the salmon spawning and grizzly's, black and spirit bears are all competing for the best fishing spots. Come October bear numbers are at their highest with often frenzied activity as they pack on extra fat before hibernation. October also brings forth the start of the seasonal rains which give this forest its name.
