Niagara On The Lake

Niagara on the Lake

Visit Niagara on the Lake

Introduction

Niagara on the Lake used to be called Newark and was capital of Upper Canada for a short period of time. Being close to the border it was overtaken by America in the War of 1812. The British regained it and rebuilt the town after the peace treaty of 1814.

Start your Niagara tour with a visit to the Fort George National Historic Site. Here you'll learn more about the War of 1812 and also about the fort's use during the First and Second World Wars. Let the guides lead you through the restored British military headquarters and gain a greater insight into life at the barracks.

Take a walk around the small Georgian town where the mouth of the Niagara River empties into Lake Ontario. You'll notice floral decorations, pristine streets and an abundance of parks.

Plan your visit in time for the Shaw Festival when theatrical performances are staged. Enjoy a tour of local vineyards or take advantage of Niagara Falls being so close.
