Holidays in February contrast winter fun with the chance for some Southern Hemisphere sun. Our specialists have picked out their top trips for the month to help you plan your escape. There's everything from ice hotel stays to trips through Kerala's dreamy backwaters.
Much of northern Europe is still tucked up under its snowy blanket. Snowmobiles and dogsleds rush through the wilds of Finnish and Swedish Lapland, while the ICEHOTEL stands majestically. And, for the best Northern Lights viewing, head to Tromso – Norway’s Arctic capital. Not to be outdone, Canada also excites with ice hotels, mountain lodges and winter activities.
The Americas & Caribbean
On the other hand, Central America and the Caribbean remain temptingly sunny. Costa Rica is a particular highlight, along with Cuba – just remember to book early for those cigars and mojitos. Further south, Brazil’s Bahia beaches are a great option as the country begins to dance to the beat of Carnival, again to be booked well in advance. Further celebrations can be had with the wildly popular Mardi Gras in New Orleans. It’s also a great time to visit the rest of southern America or make a hop out to Hawaii.
Escape to Africa
North Africa offers unbroken sunshine at this time of year, so cool off with a cruise down the Nile, stopping off at the ancient heritage of Luxor and Aswan. Or, head down to Tanzania for tropical island life on Zanzibar and the Serengeti’s wildebeest calving – a predator’s dream. South Africa also excites with safaris and spectacular Garden-Route drives.
The Indian Subcontinent
Then, on the Subcontinent, it’s an excellent time to visit Rajasthan’s fort cities, Kerala’s palm-fringed backwaters and Sri Lanka’s beaches and jungle-clad wonders. But, if you head further east, Malaysia and Thailand welcome with island paradises, while cruises along the Mekong River brings you between Vietnam and Cambodia’s cultural riches.
Holidays Down Under
Finally, on the far side of the world, it’s the tail end of the summer for New Zealand. That said, there’s still plenty of warm weather to revel in with walks, rugby sevens, Waitangi Day and the Marlborough Wine Festival. Australia's southern states also beckon with coastal self-drives, wine tasting and stays in some of the world's greatest cities.
