This recently renovated vineyard and spa resort is the perfect base for exploring the Napa Valley, America’s most celebrated wine region.
Food & wine | Relaxation | Spa
If America has an answer to Tuscany or Bordeaux as a locus for wine then Napa is it – a 35-mile arc of gently landscaped vineyards blessed by some of the country’s best weather and responsible for much of its best wine. The Meritage Resort & Spa is on the southern edge of the city of Napa, making it one of the most convenient options for an escape from San Francisco. Beyond its Tuscan-inspired walls, all the wineries of the Napa Valley lie more or less at your feet. If you’re looking for a crash course in Californian viticulture, you’d be hard pushed to find better than this quiet, contemporary classic.
With high ceilings, Tuscan-inspired décor and balconies and patios that look out across the vineyards, you could be forgiven for thinking you’ve landed in Italy. Until you notice, that is, that the label on the complimentary bottle of wine in your room says Californian. With 322 guest rooms in total, including 12 suites, plus access to 180 rooms at the adjacent Vino Bello Resort, there’s no shortage of choice. Our favourite? The Deluxe or Premier Room, for their sense of space and magnificent vineyard views.
The hotel’s main restaurant, Siena, showcases fresh Californian cuisine with a pronounced Italian influence while, for breakfast and lunch, Blend keeps la dolce vita going with gelato, Italian coffee, fresh pastries and other baked goods. In summer there’s also a poolside bar offering drinks and light bites. To really focus on the wine, however, follow your nose to the Trinitas Cellars Tasting Room, where wine tastings, food pairings and cellar tours take place, or relax with a glass at The Commons, the resort’s well-stocked lobby lounge bar.
There’s something to suit every mood at The Meritage Resort & Spa. The full-service spa, Spa Terra, is 40 feet underground, beneath nine acres of hillside vineyards, and features waterfalls, pools to soak in, steam-room grottos and a comprehensive list of therapies and treatments. Back at ground level, the 1,650-square-foot fitness centre opens right onto the vineyards, while the sports-themed Crush Ultra Lounge offers pool tables, six bowling lanes, big screen TVs and plenty of comfy couches.
