Located on the edge of Memphis’s downtown, all of the ‘Blues City’s’ attractions are within easy reach. Make a pilgrimage to Graceland or book a tour at Sun Studios where Johnny Cash, Elvis and B.B. King made their starts. Of course, no trip to Memphis would be complete without a walk down Beale Street where the strums of blues guitars spill out of bars and the sweet smell of sticky barbecue wafts lazily down the street. Closer to home, river walks will bring you past independent cafés and grand homes of Memphis’s well to do.
From your room, watch the sun set over the Mississippi River through a flower-boxed open window before retiring to your four-poster bed that comes with Frette linens, white-on-white duvets and a generous helping of plush pillows. Or, you may want to relax with a book and a glass of wine in one of the library-style seating areas dotted throughout the hotel. Dark wood furniture and deep red curtain drapes round off the luxurious interiors while suites come with spacious sitting areas and garden tubs.
Paulette’s Restaurant serves inventive chef-created offerings with dishes ranging from lamb chops served with carrot puree and crabmeat crêpes to fish tacos and buttermilk chicken sandwiches. Tug’s, across the road from Paulette’s, serves classic southern favourites with meals including meatloaf and Mississippi catfish while, for river reviews, head upstairs to the Terrace – an intimate restaurant that serves moderns twists on the classics with particularly good seafood.
The hotel takes its southern hospitality seriously. Guests are treated to a glass of champagne or wine at check-in along with port wine accompanied by a selection of chocolate truffles at turn-down. You’ll also enjoy an equally complimentary daily gourmet breakfast. Apart from the small fitness centre, the bars at the aforementioned restaurants are a particular highlight; enjoy the convivial atmosphere at Tug’s or river views at Terrace.
