Unpretentious Sonoma’s slow pace and easy-going charm are starting to lure wine tasters from Napa Valley. And, it has the history to match. The town, settled in 1823 by European colonialists, features period churches and a Spanish plaza, one of only a few of its kind in California. Indeed, the hotel itself is something of a Spanish hacienda. However, the main attractions of Sonoma County are its more than 400 wineries. With the hotel just outside of town, it’s a perfect jumping off point for a tour, by bike or otherwise, to any number of these world-class vineyards.
Recently renovated, the hotel’s heritage rooms and suites have been tastefully decorated in a typical provincial style, inviting in the rural charm of Sonoma wine country as soothing colour schemes remind guests of the attached spa. All rooms feature carefully restored tile bathrooms and marble baths while those with a fireplace are a particular treat. For something a bit extra, four-poster bed suites with balconies and patios look out over the courtyard or the wide-blade foliage of the hotel’s surrounds.
The Inn’s premier dining room, the Santé Restaurant, has a nationwide reputation for outstanding food. The recipient of Michelin designations and an AAA Four Diamond Award, the kitchen serves only the freshest local produce. Elegantly simple dishes are designed to let the natural flavours of Californian meats, poultry and seafood shine through, all complemented by a wine list of over 500 Sonoma and Napa wines. For a more relaxed environment, The Big 3 serves hearty country breakfasts and American bistro food while the poolside Water Tower Bar rounds off the hotel’s restaurant collection.
The standout performers at Fairmont Sonoma are, without a doubt, its golf course and the excellent spa. Set on 177 acres of idyllic wine country landscape, the course’s long and short holes are spotted with ancient oaks and lakes with the Mayacamas Mountains an imposing backdrop. After a day’s traipsing round vineyards, pick out one of the signature treatments of the award-winning spa. Or, simply relax by its inviting fireplaces or mineral baths. Elsewhere, there’s a well thought out pool area, fitness centre and bar.
