KwaZulu-Natal Discovery Self-Drive
Discover the highlights of Zululand in luxury
The South African province of KwaZulu-Natal is perhaps the most dramatic and varied in the country, and with Durban so well served by international flights, it makes an easy and rewarding trip in its own right, especially tempting if this is not your first time in the country.
Those who visit will find the stark and stunning Drakensberg Mountains, the emotive battlefields of Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift, some of the country’s best private game reserves, the coastal dune forests and unspoiled beaches of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park (formerly Greater St Lucia Wetland Park), and the many resort towns that line the Indian Ocean around Durban.
Any aspect of this sample itinerary can be tailored to suit your individual requirements by talking to one of our Southern Africa experts.
2 nights Drakensberg Mountains • 2 nights Zululand • 4 nights safari Phinda Private Game Reserve • 4 nights Umhlanga (Indian Ocean coast)
Days 1-2: Drakensberg Mountains
Fly direct into Durban’s new Umhlanga Airport and collect your hire car on arrival. Then drive towards the Drakensberg Mountains, located approximately two and a half hours from Durban.
The Drakensberg is one of South Africa’s prime eco-tourism destinations and a well-deserved World Heritage Site. In this spectacular mountain range you can enjoy the ultimate freedom of great open spaces in a world of gigantic peaks and buttresses, where eland pick out paths along towering sandstone cliffs and vultures soar above crystal-clear rivers and remote hidden valleys.
Stay: Cleopatra Mountain Farmhouse (BLD)
Days 3-4: Fugitives’ Drift
The name Zulu (which means Heaven) aptly describes the rolling expanses, mist-clad hills and traditional settlements of the Zululand region. Enjoy two nights at Fugitives’ Drift, acclaimed for its battlefield tours to Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift.
Since establishing the lodge in 1989 until his death in 2007, David Rattray thrilled visitors with his knowledgeable, thought provoking and often emotionally charged depictions of the Anglo-Zulu War. His legacy lives on through the team he put in place, with his wife Nicky and her staff setting the benchmark for heritage tourism in South Africa - they are simply the best storytellers you are ever likely to meet.
Stay: Fugitives’ Drift (BLD)
Days 5-8: Phinda Private Game Reserve.
Drive east to Phinda Private Game Reserve, a model for conservation, whose communities are supported by our not-for-profit charity The WEXAS Travel Foundation. Spread over 23,000 hectares of Big Five wilderness, the reserve offers chances to spot shy suni antelope, track rhino in the bushveld, observe breeding herds of elephants and see cheetahs teach their cubs how to hunt. Enjoy twice-daily game drives with expert rangers, spontaneous bush picnics and 5-star service in one of four luxury lodges.
Stay: Phinda Private Game Reserve (BLD)
Days 9-12: Umhlanga Coast.
After your early morning game drive and a hearty breakfast, drive towards the coast and spend your final few days relaxing at our recommended hotel, The Oyster Box, an absolute gem set right on the edge of the Indian Ocean.
Stay: The Oyster Box Hotel (B)
Day 13: Durban
Take a short drive back to Durban’s new Umhlanga airport, where you will drop your car off, before your flight to the UK.
