A 16-day self-drive through the Rocky Mountains from Calgary to Vancouver

Mountains, lakes, glaciers and forests form the backdrop to this popular self-drive tour, which takes in many of western Canada’s major highlights.

1 night Calgary • 2 nights Banff • 1 night Lake Louise • 2 nights Jasper • 1 night Clearwater • 2 nights Gold Bridge • 1 night Whistler • 2 nights Tofino • 1 night Victoria • 2 nights Vancouver

Day 1: Calgary
The tour begins in Alberta’s largest city, known for its annual Stampede.

Days 2-3: Banff
A leisurely drive through the foothills of the Rockies takes you to Banff National Park. You’ll have time to go hiking or take a gondola ride up Sulphur Mountain.

Day 4: Lake Louise
Continue through the Bow Valley to Lake Louise, the ‘Jewel of the Rockies’. The Victoria Glacier stretches almost to the water’s edge, making this Canada’s most photographed lake.

Days 5-6: Jasper
A spectacular drive winds through the Icefields Parkway. Stopping at the Columbia Icefield you’ll have the chance to venture onto a glacier aboard a specially designed Ice Explorer vehicle. From there its on to Jasper National Park, where optional activities include rafting on the Athabasca River, a route used by fur traders, led by an experienced national park guide.

Day 7: Wells Gray Provincial Park/Clearwater
Take in fine views of mist-shrouded Mount Robson before visiting mineral springs, dormant volcanoes and the towering Helmcken Falls.

Days 8-9: Gold Bridge
Follow in the footsteps of gold-seekers, visiting towns and villages associated with the Cariboo Gold Rush of the 1800s. Try your hand at gold panning or some of the outdoor activities available at the Tyax Mountain Lake Resort, the largest log lodge in the west.

Day 10: Whistler
A short drive takes you to the premier resort town of Whistler, where you can try white-water rafting or go horse riding or hiking in the spectacular setting provided by the Coast Mountains. Alternatively, relax in the town’s boutiques, restaurants and cafes.

Days 11-12: Pacific Rim National Park
Drive down the Sea to Sky Highway, where you may catch a glimpse of bears, deer and wolves. A ferry will transport you to Vancouver Island, where we recommend joining a whale-watching cruise in Tofino.

Day 13: Victoria
Take the coastal road to the charming maritime city of Victoria. Stroll through the Inner Harbour or take in the giant totem poles of Thunderbird Park.

Days 14-15: Vancouver
The tour finishes in Vancouver where you can enjoy shops, theatres, cafes and restaurants.

Day 16: Depart
Head to the airport for your flight back to the UK.
