British Airways has announced a new, non-stop route between London Heathrow and Charleston – the oldest and largest city in the state of South Carolina. It’s the city's very first international link.
The twice-weekly flights are set to launch from April 4, 2019, in time for Charleston's spring blossoms and summer idyll.
Sean Doyle, British Airways’ Director of Network and Alliances, enthused: “You can’t help but get sucked in to the old-world charm of Charleston. Its cobblestone streets, colourful houses and historical buildings make it a unique city.”
Indeed, Charleston is a destination in its own right. The first shots of the Civil War were fired in its Fort Sumter. The city’s superb restaurants effortlessly blend worldwide influences. And its 18th-century charm lives on in manicured church gardens and antebellum plantations.
However, Charleston also neatly fits into that great American tradition – an epic road trip. Underpinning the growing popularity of America’s Deep South, this new Charleston route comes off the back of British Airways’ recent expansion to Nashville and New Orleans. It all makes for a perfect, multi-centre getaway.
