Day by day itinerary

Day 1
Munich

Arrive in Munich and spend a day exploring the city's most important monuments, including the Cathedral of the Virgin, whose imposing domes can be seen from all across the city, and Marienplatz, which has been the city's main square since 1158 and is home to an array of shops, cafes and restaurants. You'll also tour the Putsch at Feldherrnhalle; the Königsplatz, where the Nazi Party's mass rallies were held; and the site of the former Nazi Party headquarters, all of which played an important role in the build up to World War II.

Stay: Golden Leaf Parkhotel im Lehel (Standard) or Holiday Inn Munich City Centre (Superior)

Meals: Breakfast included

Day 2
Munich – Berchtesgaden – Munich

In the morning, travel to Berchtesgaden and explore the beautiful, traditional bavarian village. Later, visit the “Eagle‘s Nest“, a Bavarian mountain retreat which was built as a present for Hitler‘s 50th birthday, as both his home and headquarters in the south. The region of Berchtesgaden later served as an important strategic objective for the Allied forces in World War II. Return to Munich in the evening.

Stay: Golden Leaf Parkhotel im Lehel (Standard) or Holiday Inn Munich City Centre (Superior)

Days 3-4
Nuremberg

Today begins with a visit to Dachau Concentration Camp and your first glimpse of the horrors of the Nazi regime during World War II. See the memorial dedicated to the victims of the holocaust and learn about the daily lives of those held here. Later, continue to Nuremberg, scene of some of the Nazi Party's most vociferous rallies, and home to Courtroom 600, where the Nazi trials were held after the war.

The following day, explore Nuremberg and relive world history with a visit to Courtroom 600, where Nazi trials were held. This afternoon, take a visit to the Documentation Center, the striking museum at the site of the former Nazi Party Rally Grounds.

Stay: InterCity Hotel Nuremberg (Standard) or Hotel Maritim (Superior)

Meals: Breakfast included

Day 5
Prague

Leave Nuremberg behind today as you switch your attention away from World War II to the Cold War, travelling across the border to the Czech Republic and the enchanting city of Prague. Here you'll explore a number of fascinating Cold War monuments and landmarks along with locations that played an important role in the Velvet Revolution, the non-violent transition of power, which ended Communist rule in the former Czechoslovakia at the end of the 1980s.

Stay: Hotel Lippert (Standard) or Hotel Yasmin (Superior)

Meals: Breakfast included

Day 6
Dresden

Head back into Germany and the city of Dresden, a former East German industrial centre and home to a number of significant Cold War sites. In 1989, during the collapse of East Germany, the city was a scene of chaos and unrest as thousands of people clashed with police, army and the German state security services. It was during this time that current Russian president Vladimir Putin, was stationed in the city as an agent of the KGB.

Stay: Tryp Dresden Neustadt (Standard) or Hilton Dresden (Superior)

Breakfast included

Day 7
Berlin

After breakfast travel to Berlin and visit the House of the Wannsee Conference, this was used from 1941 to 1945 by the SS as a conference centre and guest house. The rest of the day is at  your leisure to explore Berlin; the artistic center of the country with a large number of museums, art galleries and theatre shows.

Stay: Hampton by Hilton (Standard) or NH Friedrichstrasse (Superior)

Day 8
Departure

On the final morning of your tour you'll visit a number of the city's historic landmarks, which played significant roles in both World War II and the Cold War, including the Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag and Checkpoint Charlie's East Side Gallery, where, after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, artists from across the world gathered to create a lasting art gallery of more than 100 paintings, an international memorial to freedom and peace.
