City | City-break | Short break
Venice’s mercantile past has brought great riches to this once all-powerful republic – a wealth that stands today in gold-dipped basilicas and grand Gothic palaces. You’ll explore it all on an exclusive guided tour before turning out to the city’s surrounding islands on a private boat trip. There’s the colourful tumble of Murano’s canal-side beauty and the greener aspect of remote Torcello and its ancient churches. Of course, there’s also time for that most quintessential of Venetian experiences – the gondola punt.
Day by day itinerary
Flying into Venice, your transfer will bring you to your central hotel. Choose between the minimalist chic of artsy Hotel L’Orologio and the more historic delights of Baglioni Hotel Luna – an aristocratic Venetian palace complete with 18th century painted ceilings. Either way you’ll be excellently positioned, overlooking the Grand Canal itself. To welcome you to the city, we’ve included a trip on a gondola. You’ll have the option of either an afternoon laze along the storied waterways or an evening jaunt, watching the city’s famed Baroque architecture come to life with atmospheric lighting.
After your generous Italian buffet spread you’ll orientate yourself with a walking tour of the city. Your private guide will shed some light on its rich, innovating past while showcasing its landmarks including the famous St. Mark’s Square. Since its 9th century inception, the piazza has been venerated with everything from a golden Venetian-Byzantine basilica to the Gothic grandeur of the Doge’s Palace. You’ll enjoy entrance to the latter to fully appreciate its stucco detailing, grand statues and 16th century full-wall works by such names as Tintoretto. Other highlights include the square’s near 100-metre-high brick bell tower, one of Venice’s icons.
To help you explore further, your third day will be given over to a private boat tour out to the Venetian islands. Murano is the best known, famous for its beautiful glasswork factories. You’ll visit its elegant square and historic churches, including the 12th century Basilica dei Santi Maria e Donato and its grand Byzantine mosaics. There’s also the chance to pick up some of the island’s famous artisan crafts – lace work complements the glass wear – on visits to the island’s museums and boutiques, housed in a pretty patchwork of brightly coloured buildings. Conversely, lesser-visited Torcello is known for its slower pace of life. Here, terracotta mazes are replaced by open greenery and the region’s oldest church – the Church of Santa Fosca. From its 11th century Greek-cross plan, you’ll enjoy stunning views over the island and surrounding lagoon. After lunch at an island of your choice, your guide will take you back to Venice.
Meals: B L
On your last day in Venice we recommend an optional food and wine walking tour. The city has long been known for its unique gastronomy, with local seafood and handmade pasta taking centre stage. This being Italy, it’s all matched with some of the country’s finest varietals. Otherwise, you’ll have the day at leisure to lose yourself in the rabbit warren of canals and alleyways before your flight home.
