Natural world | Off the beaten track | Safari | Wildlife
The word safari means 'journey' in Tanzania's native Kiswahili language. And what a journey this is as you travel from the bustling hub of Arusha to Lake Manyara and on to the volcanic beauty of the long-extinct Ngorongoro Crater, ending with the vast, wildlife-rich plains of the Serengeti. Along the way you'll watch out for Africa's celebrated wildlife as the Big Five of lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard and rhino wander amid thousands-strong herds of wildebeest and zebra. Throughout you'll be treated to stays in some of Tanzania's most luxurious safari accommodation, with everything from tree-top camps to cliff-side lodges providing a stylish backdrop to included gourmet dining and a host of expert-led excursions.
Day by day itinerary
After some included airport lounge relaxation, board your overnight flight to Tanzania.
Arriving into Tanzania, take a private transfer from Kilimanjaro airport to the bustling sprawl of Arusha. Set beneath the snow-dusted summits of mounts Meru and Kilimanjaro, it's a city of colourful markets and verdant parkland where lively restaurants and souvenir stalls vie for attention amid its traffic-cluttered streets. Away from its city-centre hubbub, however, your elegant coffee-farm accommodation on the edge of Duluti Lake provides all the sanctuary you'll need for a first night of peaceful relaxation before your safari begins.
Stay: Lake Duluti Lodge, Arusha (Deluxe)
After breakfast and a private transfer, you'll fly out to Lake Manyara National Park, one of Tanzania's smallest but most beautiful reserves. Framed by the western escarpment of the spectacular Rift Valley, its eponymous, alkaline lake is, during the rainy season, host to several million flamingo. Meanwhile its diversity of ecosystems – there's 11 in total ranging from evergreen forest to open savannah and marshland – play host to huge herds of elephant, buffalo and wildebeest along with leopards, hyenas and a famous population of tree-climbing lions. You'll stay at the andBeyond Lake Manyara Tree Lodge, the only lodge inside the national park. Cradled in the branches of a mahogany forest, its ten luxury suites, each with a free-standing soaking tub and private veranda, look out across the canopy as included game drives introduce you to the nature all around.

A shared transfer across the wildlife-rich savannah brings you to the spectacular Ngorongoro Crater Conservation Area. The crater itself, now an extinct volcanic caldera, plays host to some 30,000 protected animals, including black rhino, large herds of elephants and prides of black-maned lions. Check into the andBeyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge for twice-daily Big Five game drives in the company of expert guides, returning to luxurious, butler-served suites each with chandelier-lit bath tubs, open fireplaces and sweeping crater views from the lodge's unique vantage point on the crater rim.

A light-aircraft hop and transfer brings you to your luxury tented camp on the banks of the Grumeti River in the Serengeti's Western Corridor. A year-round haven for wildlife – the riverine forest setting is home to endemic colobus monkeys and some of Africa's largest crocodiles – it's perhaps best known as the place to watch the annual migration. Each year, between June and July, an estimated three million animals – mostly wildebeest – make the journey from Tanzania to Kenya's Masai Mara in a wildlife spectacle seldom rivalled anywhere else on earth. No matter what time of the year you visit, expect to see a host of wildlife on included, twice-daily game drives in the company of expert, andBeyond guides, returning to in-camp luxuries including delicious food, open-air showers and a delightful pool.
