This 6-day itinerary is a wonderful end or beginning to your trip to explore Atlantic Canada at its charming best. Newfoundland's rugged coastline is peppered with fishing villages and whale-watching peaks, and this trip sees you explore the colourful row houses of St. John's and its surrounds. Full of old-town charm, the city contains fascinating archaeological settlements and historic lighthouses that lie alongside colossal glaciers, stunning vistas and craggy coastline, perfectly explored with walking tours and boat trips, culminating your evenings with a stay in quaint B&B accommodation.

Day by day itinerary

Day 1
UK / St. John’s

Relax with included airport lounge access before your flight to St. John’s, arrive and head to your accommodation, the charming Leaside Manor Heritage Inn. This quaint heritage house is in the historic Waterford valley among acres of gardens overlooking the charming city of St John's. Traditional architecture combines with contemporary flourishes to ensure a feel of comfortable luxury throughout, with accommodation ranging from cosy bayside rooms to four poster beds and jacuzzi tubs with aged hardwood floors.

The most easterly point in North America, St John's is reminiscent of an old fishing village on a grand scale; a hub of charming colourful row houses and criss-cross cobbles framed by green hills and waterfront. There's a whole host of things to do in its surrounds, from hikes that hug the dramatic coast to boat trips spotting whales and puffins with a backdrop of looming icebergs.

Day 2
St John’s & Cape Spear Tour

Today enjoy a hearty breakfast in the cosy dining room of your accommodation or indulge in breakfast in bed before embarking on a more detailed tour of St John's and Cape Spear. You'll arrive at Cape Spear, a National Historic site, via a scenic drive – discover the eponymous lighthouse, walk through a World War II gun battery and spot whales from the panoramic head. After heading back to the city, you'll walk up Signal Hill, greeted by spectacular views as you hear historic stories of the oldest colony in North America. You’ll also visit ultra-scenic Quidi Vidi, originally a fishing village and now home to a stunning harbour, home of the famous annual St. John’s Regatta that takes place each summer and Newfoundland's largest microbrewery, the Quidi Vidi Brewing Company, as well as charming antique shops and an old pub.

You'll also explore the fascinating Government House and the stunning Roman Catholic Cathedral overlooking the city. A quick orientation of the shops and restaurants of downtown finish the tour, so tonight perhaps enjoy dinner in the buzzing atmosphere of one of the eateries in St John's. Its fish dishes are, unsurprisingly, particularly notable – try Mallard Cottage for some deliciously fresh seafood.

Day 3
Avalon Peninsula

Today will see you travel to the spectacular southern shore of the Avalon peninsula along the stunning Irish Loop, characterised by picturesque harbours along winding coastline framed by enormous icebergs, lighthouses and archeological sites. Small 'outport' communities for which Newfoundland is so famous pepper the coastline – the Aquaforte harbour is a worthwhile stop, where fjords evocative of Norway lie alongside villages with a deep fishing history – fishermen have passed through the sheltered harbour for centuries.

Here, you'll visit the Colony of Avalon Archaeology Site, wonderfully preserved remains of an early settlement, where stone and timber-frame houses once lay among cobbled streets. Founded by George Calvert, the colony was 'forgotten' and its remains laid undisturbed for centuries. You’ll walk on 17th century streets, see a historic herb garden and discover the remains of everyday life in one of the earliest European colonies in North America.

Stay: Bread & Cheese Country Inn (Superior)

Day 4
Avalon Peninsula

This morning drive the western short of the Avalon Peninsula via Cape St. Mary's. Take time to visit the Cape St. Mary's Seabird Sanctuary at Bird Rock - one of the largest nesting sites for gannets in North America. Continue along the Cape Shore route to Castle Hill National Historic Park - a fort erected in the 17th century to protect the once French capital of Newfoundland, before returning to Bay Bulls.

Stay: Bread & Cheese Country Inn (Superior)

Day 5
Avalon Peninsula to Brigus to St John's

Today you will leave Bay Bulls and take the scenic coastal loop drive along Conception Bay to the charming village of Brigus - residence of the famous northern explorer Captain Bob Bartlett. Visit Hawthorne Cottage, Stone Barn Museum and The Tunnel whilst in Brigus, Depart Brigus and continue along the Baccalieu Trail through scenic communities such as Cupids, Harbour Grace, Heart's Content and Dildo, before returning along the Marine Coastal Drive back to St John's.
