This four-day, long weekend break to Sörbyn Lodge & Aurora Safari Camp in the heart of Swedish Lapland will live long in the memory. courtesy of the terrific potential for Northern Lights sightings, dogsled touring with purebred Siberian huskies, a stay at Lapland's first African safari-influenced Sami-style camp - with the option of some expert tuition from professional Northern Lights photographer Fredrik Broman or one of his experienced colleagues - and perhaps the best food in the Arctic.
Day by day itinerary
Day
1
Sörbyn Lodge
Fly to Luleå and transfer to Sörbyn Lodge. Located on a beautiful lake near the small village of Sörbyn, accommodation here includes traditional timber cabins as well as newly built hotel rooms, but it's the outstanding food that grabs most of the headlines, with local ingredients such as fish, moose, reindeer and cloudberries all featuring on a menu of regional specialities. Spend the remainder of the day enjoying winter activities, which include snowmobiling, ice fishing, cross-country skiing and most notably husky safaris. These dogsled trips are a cut above most, using purebred Siberian huskies closely bonded to their Swedish owner, Richard Karlsson, who leads his guests through the surrounding expanses of frozen lakes and forests.

Aurora Safari Camp
Enjoy a morning snowmobile tour along frozen rivers and through snow-laden forests before transferring after lunch to Aurora Safari Camp. The camp was established by professional photographer Fredrick Broman, who drew inspiration from the camps he has worked with in East Africa. Fredrick now specialises in night-time photography, and in the stars and Northern Lights in particular. So bring along your camera for some optional expert tuition from Frederick or one of his colleagues (not included). You'll spend the night in a traditional lavvo (Sami tent) in a comfortable bed and Arctic sleeping bag. A traditional sauna is also close at hand to keep off the chill.
