  • 1 Night Mount Saint Helens
  • 2 Nights Seattle

Recommended for:
Mountains | Self-drive | Summer

Start your holiday in Seattle where independent breweries rub shoulders with sky-piercing towers before exploring the natural delights of Olympic National Park. Here, vast rainforests brush up against glacially carved mountains as coastal wildernesses are the front to alpine meadows and sparkling lakes. You’ll then head back inland to the iconic white-grey lines and ancient forests of Mount Rainier along with the volcanic cone of Mount St Helens. Finally, you’ll return for two nights in the Emerald City, named after its picturesque, green ring of evergreen trees.

Day by day itinerary

Day 1

Fly from the UK, arriving into the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport where you’ll pick up your hire car and make the short drive to your downtown hotel, just a couple of blocks away from the Town Hall. You’ll then spend the evening at leisure; perhaps dine at one of the city famed farm-to-fork restaurants or sample the best in local craft beers in the city’s burgeoning microbrewery scene. Alternatively, delve into one of Seattle’s eclectic neighbourhoods; between refined Queen Anne and hip Capitol Hill, there’s something to suit everyone.

Stay: Hotel Vintage (Deluxe)

Day 2
Olympic National Park

Begin your journey through Washington by travelling across Puget Sound, onto the Olympic Peninsula. You’ll stop off at the aptly named ‘Banana Belt’ in the Sequim area where anomalously low rainfall makes for sunny vistas before moving into the national park itself. Here, you’ll call into Hurricane Ridge where wildflower speckled meadows are framed by towering pines, themselves the foreground to snow-capped peaks. You’ll then make your way to your idyllic lakeside accommodation.

Stay: Lake Crescent Lodge (Superior)

Day 3
Hoh Rainforest

One of the area’s most arresting features, Hoh Rainforest is a mossy tumble of lush, green coniferous and deciduous species all watched over by a dense, sunlight blocking canopy. It makes for enchanting boardwalk treks and nature trail loops. You’ll then follow the rugged Olympic Coast to end the day on the beach with that age-old American tradition – s’mores – provided by your waterside accommodation.

Stay: Alderbrook Resort (Superior)

Day 4
South Puget Sound

You’ll have today to relax at the resort or explore further. Make use of the spa or take a walk in the grounds, keeping your eyes peeled for soaring eagles. It’s also an ideal place to enjoy seafood with freshly shucked oysters complemented by an extensive wine list. In the afternoon, head further afield for a national park hike or take a kayak out on the waters before visiting the region’s idyllic, waterfront communities.

Stay: Alderbrook Resort (Superior)

Day 5
Mount Rainier National Park

Proudly emblazoned on each of the state’s license plates, Mount Rainier is Washington’s crown jewel. Pack your camera and binoculars on a daylong expedition into the surrounds of this active volcano. Wander through old-growth forests, skirt lakes and duck under waterfalls as you trace its trails, in awe of the natural wonder encased in 35 square miles of snow and ice. Be sure to start with the Paradise Visitor Centre for maps and information.

Stay: Wellspring Spa & Resort or Paradise Inn (Superior)

Day 6
Mount St Helens

May 18 is a date etched on the minds of all Washingtonians. On this day in 1980, Mount St Helens erupted with catastrophic results. Learn about it all in the excellent National Monument where eyewitness accounts, facts and ridge walks tell the story of this geological tragedy. Later, hike the Hummocks trail to get a closer look at this still changing landscape.

Stay: Wellspring Spa & Resort or Paradise Inn (Superior)

Days 7-8

Today, make the two hours drive back north to Seattle for your two night stay and drop off your hire car. The city that brought us Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain and now Starbucks is full of energy. Step into Pike Market’s bustle to discover handicraft shops, boho cafés and independent restaurants. In the Space Needle, you’ll also have an excellent overview of Seattle’s giant skyscrapers dwarfed by Mt. Rainier peak. For something a little different, arrange a private tour to sample some of the local varietals from the Woodinville wine region.

Stay: Hotel Vintage (Deluxe)

Day 9
Depart Seattle

Make your way to the airport to catch your flight back to the UK.

Day 10
Arrive UK

Arriving back in the UK, continue your onward journey home.
