Get away to a log cabin set among the wild beauty of southern Iceland, enjoying only glaciers, giant mountains and quiet fishing villages as your neighbours. As such, you’ll be perfectly positioned to spot the Northern Lights, while your hire car offers the flexibility to explore further, taking in the geysers, waterfalls and national-park beauty of Iceland’s Golden Circle. Then, end with a night among Reykjavik’s historic charm.
Day by day itinerary
Begin in style with complimentary airport lounge access before your flight out to to Reykjavik, picking up your hire car on arrival. We highly recommend making a stop at the Blue Lagoon, taking a dip in the otherworldly blue of its geothermal spa waters before making the short drive down the coast to your cosy, log-cabin accommodation. A member of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World, it enjoys a delightful sense of seclusion on Iceland’s southern coast, far away from any light pollution – ideal for spectacular displays of the Northern Lights. The hotel even features its own observatory, complete with telescopes roll-off roof.

After breakfast at your hotel’s gourmet restaurant, taken overlooking one of Iceland’s finest salmon rivers, you’ll have a full day to explore southern Iceland’s myriad delights. Be sure to take your car out for an ultra-scenic road trip, sweeping through stark volcanic landscapes where black-sand beaches front hot springs, magnificent waterfalls and remote fishing villages. There’s also the option of a helicopter or Super Jeep tour, spotting everything from glaciers to geyser among the region’s dramatic mountains. Then, at day’s end, return to the outdoor hot tubs of your accommodation, turning your eyes skywards in search of the Lights.

The Golden Circle and Reykjavik
Today, after another hearty breakfast, you’ll set off along the Golden Circle. Perhaps Iceland’s best-known driving route, it links some of Iceland’s most impressive natural wonders, including the magnificent Gullfoss Waterfall and Strokker – the great geyser that you can set your watch by its 10-minutely eruptions. There’s also Thingvellir National Park; a dramatic rift valley formed by a tectonic divide, it’s the spectacular home to the ruins of Iceland’s thousand-year-old parliament. You’ll then finish in the Icelandic capital, dropping your hire car off and settling into your boutique accommodation. Found right in Reykjavik’s centre, you’ll have its colourful history, world-class galleries and thriving dining scene on your doorstep.
