On this luxury Oman holiday, you will relax at Alila Jabal Akhdar, an excellent, eco-friendly resort built in a traditional style situated on the edge of a dramatic canyon, and visit Nizwa, capital of the interior and birthplace of Islam in Oman. You will then visit the the capital, Muscat, touring its bustling souq (bazaar), perhaps haggling for a bargain of your own. Your stay will be at the Shangri-La Muscat (al Bandar), with fantastic views of the Gulf and a contemporary Omani feel.

Day by day itinerary

Day 1
Depart UK, Arrive Oman

Fly to Muscat and, on arrival, transfer to the stunning Alila Jabal Akhdar for three nights.

Stay: Alila Jabal Akhdar, Oman (Deluxe)

Day 2
Alila Jabal Akhdar

Spend today relaxing at the resort. Enjoy the remote, marooned feel to the place, surrounded by desert landscape and stunning scenery. Standing at 2,000m above sea level, it has been built using traditional Omani techniques and local materials, without compromising on style and comfort.

Stay: Alila Jabal Akhdar, Oman (Deluxe)

Day 3

Today you will take a 1.5 hour journey to Nizwa, capital of the interior and birthplace of Islam in Oman. It is famous for its Round Tower Fort, built in the 17th century, as well as its excellent Friday cattle market, selling goats, sheep and cattle. Stop by Nizwa's souq, where ornamental, silver jewellery is sold alongside intricately, hand-carved khanjars (daggers).

Our next stop is Al Hamra, a 400 year old town also known as Hamra Al Abryeen, with reference to the Al Abri tribe who live there. Some of the oldest preserved houses in Oman can be found here, a town built on a tilted rock slab. Many of the houses have two stories, with ceilings made of palm beams and fronds topped by mud and straw. Enjoy a walk through this old village and explore more about the falaj irrigation system. A falaj consists of a complex chain of structures based on the laws of physics relating to water. The word falaj probably derives from an old Semitic word meaning 'distribution'. Despite all the technical advances of the modern era, no better solution has been found than this irrigation system, the origins of which are lost in the distant past.

While heading to Jabal Shams, you will stop at the terraced farming village of Wadi Ghul and enjoy the views from the highest peak in the Jabal Shams range. The range is also referred to as 'Mountain of the Sun', is known for the Grand Canyon of Arabia, as it fissures abruptly between the flat canyon rims, exposing vertical cliffs of 1,000m and more.

Return to Alila Jabal Akhdar for your final night, before heading towards Muscat.

Stay: Alila Jabal Akhdar, Oman (Deluxe)

Day 4
Shangri-La Muscat (al Bandar)

Depart the hotel, with a transfer (approximately 3–3.5 hours) from the area of the Jabal Akhdar, to your next stay: Shangri-La Muscat (al Bandar). You will spend the next four nights at this fabulous resort. The al Bandar, translating as 'The Town' resembles old Muscat, and its rooms all feature a contemporary Arabian flourish and excellent views over the gardens and towards the Gulf of Oman.

Stay: Shangri La’s Barr Al Jissah Resort & Spa (Deluxe)

Day 5
Shangri-La Muscat (al Bandar)

Spend a full day at your leisure at the resort, either relaxing by the pool or by going snorkelling, diving or on a mountain trek.

Stay: Shangri La’s Barr Al Jissah Resort & Spa (Deluxe)

Day 6

Today, you will enjoy a half-day tour of Oman's capital, Muscat. The city offers visitors a rare opportunity to witness a modern centre existing in harmony with its traditional culture. With its natural harbour, Muscat, meaning ‘anchorage’, lies in a natural bowl. Our tour of the Grand Mosque (excluding Fridays) and Bait al Zubair Museum (excluding Fridays) is a brief introduction that traces Oman’s history and development.

After driving along the Cornice to visit the fish market and colourful Muttrah Souq, we make a photo stop at the official palace of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos, the magnificent Al Alam Palace flanked by the 16th century Portuguese forts of Mirani and Jalali.

Please note: all visitors must be fully covered to wrists and ankles; ladies must wear a scarf covering hair and neck for a visit to the Grand Mosque

Stay: Shangri La’s Barr Al Jissah Resort & Spa (Deluxe)
