Day by day itinerary

Day 1
Almaty

Arrive in Almaty, Kazakhstan. You'll be met at the airport and transferred to your city centre hotel where you'll have time to relax before meeting the rest of your fellow passengers ahead of the exciting journey ahead.

Stay: InterContinental

Dinner included

Day 2
Almaty

Spend the day exploring Almaty, Kazakhstan's largest city, whose name derives from the word 'alma' meaning 'apple' due to the close proximity of apple orchards in the foothills of the Tien Shan Mountains. Take a city tour to visit Panfilov Park and visit the wooden Zenkhov Cathedral. Then leave the city to visit the Chimbulak resort, where a cable car ride will lift you high into the hills and provide panoramic views of the city and surrounds.

Stay: Golden Eagle Train

Breakfast, lunch & dinner included

Day 3
Tashkent

Travel to Tashkent, the capital city of Uzbekistan, where you will have time to tour this modern Soviet-style city. Devastated by an earthquake in 1966, it has been rebuilt. Nonetheless, the Old Town still has a wealth of traditional homes and religious buildings as a small library that contains the world's oldest Koran, one of Islam's most sacred relics.

Stay: Golden Eagle train

Breakfast, lunch & dinner included

Day 4
Samarkand

Travel through Uzbekistan to Samarkand, one of the most evocative cities along the Silk Road. Founded in the 6th Century BC, the city's stunning architecture hints at its former status as one of Asia's most important cities. Take time to visit some of the most significant sites, including Registan Square, the refined Bibi Khanum Mosque and the Ulag Beg Observatory, one of the earliest Islamic astronomical observatories, built in 1428.

Stay: Golden Eagle train

Breakfast, lunch & dinner included

Day 5
Bukhara

Journey to Bukhara, in Uzbekistan. For its 2,500th anniversary in 1999 UNESCO sponsored the renovation of much of the city, which is now simply outstanding. Tour the city and visit The Ark, a fortified residence of the ruthless Emirs of Bukhara, who controlled the city until Soviet times. Then travel out of the city to discover the enchanting Palace of the Moon and Stars.

Stay: Golden Eagle train

Breakfast, lunch & dinner included

Day 6
Merv

Enter Turkmenistan and travel to Merv. Once an important stopping point on the Silk Road, this largely unrestored city claims to have briefly been the largest city in the world during the twelfth century.

Stay: Golden Eagle train

Breakfast, lunch & dinner included

Day 7
Ashgabat

Continue through Turkmenistan to the country's capital, Ashgabat. Set between the Kara Kum desert and the Kopet Dag mountains range, Ashgabat is a relatively modern city that stands on the remains of the Silk Road city of Konjikala. The city's opulent fountains, golden domes and towering modern buildings seem strangely incongruous in the desert and have earned the city the nickname of the Las Vegas of the Kara Kum.

Stay: Golden Eagle train

Breakfast, lunch & dinner included

Day 8
Khiva

Re-enter Uzbekistan and travel to Khiva, which straddles the trade routes between Mongolia, Russia, China and Persia, making it one of the most important trading points in the region. Established 2,500 years ago it is a breathtaking sight to behold, with a wealth of impressive architecture including mosques, madrassas, minarets and bazaars rising out of the desert.

Stay: Golden Eagle train

Breakfast, lunch & dinner included

Day 9
Kara Kum

Spend the day on board the train as it travels across the vast expanse of the Kara Kum desert in Kazakhstan. Take the opportunity to relax and marvel at the unique landscape, chat to fellow passengers or even take a Russian language lesson.

Stay: Golden Eagle train

Breakfast, lunch & dinner included

Day 10
Volgograd

Enter Russia and travel to Volgograd. Stood on the banks of the River Volga, the former Stalingrad was the dramatic scene of a vital Second World War battle when the Russians heroically turned back the advancing Nazi army and in so doing helped to alter the course of the war. During the day visit the sobering Mamayev Kurgan war memorial and museum to learn more.

Stay: Golden Eagle train

Breakfast, lunch & dinner included

Day 11
Russia

Spend the day on board the train relaxing in the comfort of the cabins or enjoying the beautifully designed restaurant cars as the train makes its way across Russia and towards Moscow.

Breakfast, lunch & dinner included

Day 12
Moscow

Arrive in Moscow and spend the day touring the Russian city's highlights. Discover the grandeur of the Kremlin and uncover the splendours and treasures of the Tsars in the Armoury chamber. Visit Red Square, see St Basil's Cathedral and take time to visit Lenin's tomb.
