Natural world | Northern Lights | Off the beaten track | Winter
This short break to Finnish Lapland starts in typical Scandinavian style with an overnight stay at Levin Iglut, a collection of glass igloos surrounded by stunning Arctic scenery. These secluded, heated domes, perched on the edge of a fell, offer private views of the Northern Lights and the snow-dusted forests of Finland's far north. You'll then head for the cosy comforts of Hotel Ylläshumina for three days of winter activities; there's everything from husky sledding and snowmobiling to delicious wilderness dinners.
Day by day itinerary
UK to Levin Iglut
Fly to Kittilä via Helsinki and transfer to Levin Iglut. Check in to your private glass-ceilinged igloo from where you’ll enjoy uninterrupted views of the surrounding fells and, if conditions are right, the dancing swirls of the Northern Lights. In the evening, a traditional Lappish soup dinner will be served in the cosy tipi-style restaurant. Upgrade from a Superior to a Premium Igloo and benefit from a superb location in the first row at the top of the fell, coupled with a welcome drink, beautiful Pentik crockery, bathrobe and slippers.
Stay: Levi Iglut, Finnish Lapland (Standard)
Wake up at leisure and enjoy breakfast in your igloo, looking out to the surrounding scenery. Then, a one-hour transfer will bring you to Hotel Yllashumina, with the comforts of its sauna and hot tub and wood-panelled restaurant specialising in Finnish food, fresh from the forest. It's also just a few minutes walk from Lake Äkäslompolo and a short drive from the Alpine thrills of Ylläs. one of Finland's best ski centres. The next two days are left entirely free for activities. And there’s much to choose from, with cross-country skiing, husky safaris – a firm favourite – and even a wilderness cooking school, where you’ll prepare and eat traditional forest treats.
