  • 2 Nights Ruds Vedby
  • 1 Night Copenhagen

Itinerary

Recommended for:
Activity adventure | City | History & culture | Self-drive | Summer

This seven-day self-drive starts in Copenhagen and takes in the country's most important Viking sites as you pass through a host of picturesque villages and some of the Denmark's finest scenery along the way.

Day by day itinerary

Day 1
Copenhagen

Fly to Denmark's capital and spend the rest of the day at leisure.

Stay: 71 Nyhavn, Copenhagen (Superior)

Day 2
Roskilde

After breakfast, collect your hire car and drive to this picturesque town, which was founded by the Vikings in a strategic position overlooking Roskilde Fjord. The Roskilde Cathedral is a key local landmark, in which the Viking king Harald Bluetooth is buried, and a guided tour with a local expert is a great way to learn about the town's Viking past.

Stay: Hotel Sofryd at Roskilde Fjord

Breakfast included

Day 3
Roskilde

While in Roskilde, we also highly recommend visiting the town's Viking Ship Museum - with a main display of five longboats discovered in the fjord in the 1960s on display as well as a boat yard where craftsmen and boat builders work using historical methods.

Stay: Hotel Sofryd at Roskilde Fjord

Breakfast included

Day 4
Lejre

A few kilometres from Roskilde is Lejre, an important powerbase at the beginning of the Viking age that features in the story of Beowulf. The Lejre Museum is a good starting point, before making your way to The Land of Legends - a park and open-air museum nearby, where history is brought to life via reconstructed villages from the Stone and Iron Ages, as well as the Viking era. There's the chance to try your hand at weaving, pottery making and other traditional crafts.

Stay: Kragerup Gods, Ruds Vedby

Breakfast included

Day 5
Trelleborg & Lake Tissø

The next stop is Trelleborg, a ringed fortress built by King Harald Bluetooth in 980. Here you can also meet 'real' Vikings and get a glimpse of their daily life, witnessing their combat skills and tasting the Viking brew, mjød. You might also decide to visit nearby Lake Tissø, where a large Viking-era farm was uncovered in an archaeological dig.

Stay: Kragerup Gods, Ruds Vedby

Breakfast included

Day 6
Kragerup Gods

Your final day in 'Viking Land' is all about having fun, either at Kragerup Gods with its high-wire trail through the trees, or at Gerlev Playground, with a range of games played in Viking times. Afterwards, drive back to Copenhagen and return your hire car.

Breakfast included

Stay: 71 Nyhavn, Copenhagen (Superior)

Day 7
Departure

Return to the airport in time for your onward flight.

Breakfast included
