Copenhagen is a favourite destination for travellers - cosmopolitan and proud of its heritage, it's also easy to reach and navigate. Meanwhile, Skane is one of Sweden's most popular regions for visitors, with attractive seaside towns, child-friendly sandy beaches, many miles of walking and cycling trails and some of the Scandinavia's best golf courses. The area is also considered the country's culinary heartland, with fields of yellow rapeseed and farmers markets that sell excellent local produce such as lamb, venison, goose and shellfish. Skane's great food can be tried at any number of award-winning gourmet restaurants in Malmo and the wider region, while another highlight is the town of Ystad - setting for Henning Mankell's Wallander detective series.
Day by day itinerary
Copenhagen & Malmö
Fly to Copenhagen and from there take the short train journey from Denmark to Sweden, crossing the 8km Oresund Bridge on the way to Malmo. On arrival, check in to the Clarion Collection Hotel Temperance, where you'll spend the night.
Collect your hire car and drive from Malmö to Ystad. The direct route takes around an hour, but we recommend the more scenic coastal road via Trelleborg. Stay overnight at the Ystad Saltsjobad, a spa hotel and summer resort on the shores of the Baltic Sea that overlooks a sandy beach lined with colourful beach huts.

Spend the day exploring Ystad, a town full of colourful houses and cosy coffee houses made famous by Henning Mankell's fictional detective series. His character, Kurt Wallander, lives in the town and it's possible to see some of the locations from the books, or visit Cineteket, where you'll learn how the TV series was made.

Drive back to Malmo at your own pace and check into the Clarion Collection Hotel Temperance once more. The rest of the day is free to look around this attractive city, whose 190-metre Turning Torso building is a particularly striking landmark. You might also wish to try some of the superb regional cuisine at a top local restaurant.
After breakfast, check out of the hotel and take the train back to Copenhagen airport, from where you'll catch a return flight to the UK. Alternatively, you might wish to add an extra day or two onto this itinerary so that you can see the sights of the Danish capital.
