This trip combines the freedom of a self-drive with a spectacular rail journey among western Canada’s Rocky Mountains. It all begins amid buzzing Vancouver’s sprawling parks and bohemian neighbourhoods before you board the Rocky Mountaineer to traverse the iconic spiral tunnels, trace spectacular mountain passes and skirt dramatic canyons. Choose between the comforts of SilverLeaf service for panoramic views from curved glass ceilings and oversized picture windows, or go one better with GoldLeaf service for the full glass-domed carriage experience along with upgraded meals and hotels, free-flowing drinks and snacks, and the use of an exclusive open-air observation car. You’ll explore historic Canmore next, staying in a luxury lodge among caves and mountains before driving to Banff National Park and a stay on the emblematic shores of the much-photographed Lake Louise. It’s then a scenic dash across the prairie to explore Calgary’s Wild West brashness, showcased in world-famous rodeos and atmospheric honky-tonk bars.
Day by day itinerary
UK to Vancouver
After starting your holiday in relaxing style with VIP airport lounge access you’ll board your day flight to Vancouver. Once arrived, a private transfer will see you to your hotel; both of our options are centrally located, meaning that you’ll have all of Vancouver’s delights on your doorstep, from eclectic shops and sensational art galleries to cosy forest trails, all framed by snowy mountains and the glorious views we've come to expect of Canada. Perhaps take in the Victorian charm of the historic Gastown district or go for a stroll along the city’s waterfront to combine views of the skyscraper-studded horizon edged by snow-capped mountains. Come evening, indulge with Canada’s leading craft beer and restaurant scenes, tucking into just-caught seafood.
Stay: Georgian Court Hotel (SilverLeaf) or Fairmont Hotel Vancouver (GoldLeaf)
Vancouver to Kamloops
Today you’ll board the glass domed carriages of the Rocky Mountaineer, enjoying breakfast cooked by Michelin-starred chefs in your glass-domed train car. A GoldLeaf cart, the superior option, offers spectacular viewing platforms, ideal for taking in cascading waterfalls, looming mountains topped with the shimmer of snow, and deep canyons. Leave Vancouver’s city gems to negotiate deep into the British Colombia interior, heading through lush green farmlands and cedar forests dwarfed by colossal peaks in the Fraser Valley, and take in the Coast and Cascade mountains before reaching the arid-like environment of the BC interior as you enjoy lunch in the dining car. Finally, traverse over the awe-inspiring rush of Hell’s Gate, a narrowing of the Fraser River, and the serene Kamloops Lake, to arrive at your hotel for this evening.
Stay: Kamloops hotel (SilverLeaf/GoldLeaf)

Kamloops to Canmore
Today you’ll head to the stunning scenes of Alberta and the majestic Canadian Rockies after enjoying a sumptuous breakfast on board the train. Then, discover the charms of the Rockies, with highlights including the famous Spiral Tunnels that make up much of the area's historic rail heritage, and Craigellachie, where the last spike of the Canadian Pacific Railway took place. You'll climb over Rogers Pass, a soaring mountain ridge that's lined by bright green forests in the summer and blanketed in scenic white during winter – both are just as magical. Traverse the spectacular Kicking Horse Canyon and witness Banff and the glacier-dotted Rockies in all their glory, where shimmering blue lakes and forested inlets are framed by steely, snow-capped peaks.
Here in Banff, collect your rental car and drive the scenic route to Canmore to your hotel for the next two days. This chalet-like like hotel boasts wonderful views of the dramatic landscape, with a luxury outdoor heated pool and two hot tubs a wonderful way to take in the surrounds. Tonight, perhaps enjoy the rustic ambience of the onsite Stirling Grill that uses local ingredients to create a fine dining menu in a sophisticated, elegant setting.
Stay: The Malcolm (SilverLeaf/GoldLeaf)

Today you’ve got a free day to explore Canmore at leisure, from its mountain boutiques to its scenic rivers. Perhaps head cross country skiing on the surrounding mountain trails, or dog sled through snow-covered spruce forests. If you visit in the green and blue hues of summer, head out hiking or biking among verdant peaks and pristine lakes. There’s more tranquil activities on offer too, with some of Canada’s best fishing in the surrounding rivers.

Canmore to Lake Louise
Majestic mountains and impossibly scenic alpine gems await today as you drive to Lake Louise, a journey characterised by enormous glacial lagoons edged by towering mountains and dense pine forests. You’ll arrive at Lake Louise to check in to the famous Fairmont Chateau, which looks over steely zeniths, the colossal Victoria Glacier and the emblematic turquoise lake. Its ideal location deep in the heart of Banff National Park provides endless exploration opportunities, from hiking and canoeing to horse riding. Upgrade to a lake view room for particularly spectacular vistas, then tonight why not enjoy a European-inspired mountain dinner in the cosy alpine feel of the hotel’s onsite restaurant Wallider Stube.
Stay: Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise (SilverLeaf/GoldLeaf)
Lake Louise to Calgary
Today, enjoy a morning stroll around the stunning shores of Lake Louise, or for something more adventurous, hike up to Lady Agnes Tea house, where an altitude of over 2000m provides a spectacular place for tea overlooking the lake. Then, it’s time for another emblematic road trip through Kananaskis country and the enormous ranching regions of Alberta, all trickling steams and enormous expanses of verdant forest. Reaching Calgary, you’ll find a buzzing city full of boutique stores, cosy eateries and, of course, a fantastic bar scene. We’ve included admission to the Calgary Tower for unbeatable views of the city, then check in to your hotel for this evening, both of which are excellently located in downtown Calgary. Enjoy some classic American fare; try the River Cafe for local cuisine on a stunning waterside location – the oysters and halibut are firm favourites.
