City-break | History & culture
Few countries, let alone cities, can rival Rome for its cultural riches. Three thousand years of creativity has given rise to Baroque palaces that line medieval squares, Roman ruins that intersperse Renaissance art galleries and grand churches that overlook ancient piazzas. To help you get your bearings, we’ve included two private tours. After uncovering the city’s still-standing Roman world you’ll explore the Vatican City, whose influence reaches out far beyond its half a kilometre square slice of masterpiece artworks, Sistine Chapel beauty and Catholic riches. In between, you’ll stay at one of the city’s finest hotels, perfectly positioned to make the most of Rome’s world-beating cuisine.

UK/Rome
Flying into the Italian capital you’ll be transferred to your central hotel, the luxurious Baglioni Hotel Regina. This Art Deco classic is perfectly positioned to explore the city; contrast the bustling espresso culture of its Via Veneto home and the look-at-me Baroque grandeur of Rome’s historic centre with the leafy respite of the Villa Borghese gardens. It’s all just a few minutes’ walk away. With your first day at leisure, perhaps head out and explore before returning to your hotel.

The Vatican City – between its famed masterpieces, grand Renaissance architecture and philosophy-defining importance – needs little introduction. You’ll start with the Vatican Museums whose 1,400 rooms and nine miles of artwork constitute the former wings of the Papal palace. It’s quite simply among the largest, wealthiest and most impressive collection of museums in the world, hosting works curated by the Popes through the centuries. Highlights include the Sistine Chapel’s world wonder frescoes and the Raphael Rooms – the private apartments of Pope Julius II where giant biblical scenes by the Renaissance master play out all around you. Of course no trip would be complete without visiting the impossibly ornate St. Peter’s Basilica, the world’s largest Catholic church, and its accompanying square.

Rome
Today’s focus sees you travel back in time to Imperial Rome. You’ll start with the Trevi Fountain, Pantheon, Piazza Navona and St. Peter's basilica in the company of your local guide, then travel even further back to Ancient Rome, visiting the Colosseum - completed in 80AD it still stands as the world‘s largest amphitheatre. Your expert guide will bring its gladiatorial contests and public events to life, demonstrating that the vomitorium was not a site of Roman over-indulgence but a means of ingress for the giant crowds of up to 50,000. Your next stop is the Roman Forum, a sprawl of ruins that showcase the city’s ancient centre. It’s a grandiose district of temples, basilicas and public squares that was first developed in the 7th century BC. Excavations continue to this day, continuing to unearth fresh insight into this lost civilisation.
