Copenhagen
Spend today exploring Copenhagen at your own pace. Copenhagen is contemporary and classy, a Scandinavian highlight with a focus on being green and clean. Indeed, there are few better ways to explore than by e-bike, giving you the freedom to admire the architecture of the city centre or the pastoral colours of Nyhavn waterfront, spotting the Little Mermaid statue inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale.
Visit warm cafes stuffed with books to experience the Danish concept of hygge. Copenhagen is a city for beer enthusiasts with a thriving craft brewery scene and being home to Carlsberg. Sample Danish Smørrebrød sandwiches, or for something more substantial, tuck in at one of the city’s many Michelin-starred restaurants.

Ålesund, Norway
The harbour waters of Ålesund are surrounded by elegant buildings in this haven of Art Nouveau architecture. The man-made beauty perfectly complements that of nature, the Jugendstil style set amid fjords. Practically every building boasts fantastical flourishes and eccentric quirks.
After a fire destroyed the town in 1904, Ålesund was rebuilt, turning it into the treasure trove it is today. Admire cobbled streets and dainty turrets as you make your way to the Aksla Viewpoint to let the majesty of the town wash over you.
Taste a folded svele – a type of Norwegian pancake – or try one of the town’s cosy restaurants. Ålesund was built on the sea trade, and even today, fjord cod is brought ashore before making its way around the world.

Trondheim (Trondelag), Norway
Trondheim was founded in 997 AD by Viking king Olaf Tryggvason and is the historic capital of Norway. Though it is large, there remains a welcoming, intimate feeling here.
Music aficionados will enjoy museums dedicated to Norway’s musical heritage. If you’d prefer to enjoy nature, the endless wilds of central Norway and the Trondheim Fjord are close by.
Much of the old city was destroyed in a fire, but some of its charms survive in the Bakklanden neighbourhood. Timber houses line the waterfront, and cyclists rattle along the cobbled streets past cafes, restaurants, and curiosity shops. Points of interest include Old Town bridge (Gamle Bybro) and the gothic Nidaros Cathedral, which towers above the city and was built on the burial site of King Olaf in 1070.

Åndalsnes, Norway
Located at the mouth of the river Rauma and the shores of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Romsdalsfjord, Åndalsnes was once famous for salmon fishing and is home to some of Norway’s most breathtaking scenery. Today, Åndalsnes is known as a centre for Norwegian alpine sports such as mountaineering, climbing, hiking, and even base jumping.
Just outside of Åndalsnes is the Trollstigen (Troll Road), famous for its steep inclines and eleven hairpin bends. You can also take a three-hour roundtrip rail journey from Åndalsnes to Dombas for views of mountains, valleys, and waterfalls from the comfort of your carriage. A feat of civil engineering, the train passes over numerous bridges and tunnels before performing a 180-degree turn underground.

Bergen, Norway
The World Heritage waterfront, Bryggen, is full of pastel-coloured buildings leaning charmingly together. Though it's Norway’s second-largest city, there's a warm, village-like feel here. Behind the waterfront, discover a labyrinth of alleyways and wooden decking alive with artisan craft shops and galleries. Take a short but steep hike up to the panoramic viewpoints of Fløyen mountain, or jump on the funicular for ease.
Nærøyfjorden, a nearby fjord, is perhaps Norway’s most photographed and iconic piece of scenery. Cruise through this narrow fjord’s inky waters as the slopes rise imposingly above you. Norway’s longest fjord, Sognefjord, is also nearby, adorned with plunging waterfalls and picturesque farms.

Olden, Norway
Tiny Olden is home to just 500 people and gives you the chance to witness nature at its most spectacular. Quaint farmhouses are swallowed by the village’s colossal surroundings. Olden sits at the mouth of the Oldeelva River, on the southern banks of the Nordfjord.
Embark on dreamy lake cruises, spot staggering glaciers, or ascend to viewpoints for awe-inspiring bird’s eye vantage points. See mainland Europe’s largest glacier, Jostedalsbreen, or hike to the blue-white Briksdal Glacier. Kayak across the glassy surface of the Nordfjord and relax with a coffee break at Lovatnet Lake with a plate of waffles and strawberry jam. In nearby Loen, jump on the Skylift to enjoy the view from Mount Hoven, 1,011-metres above the spread of villages, fjords, and mountains.

10
Vik, Norway
On the shores of Sognefjord, Vik is exactly the sort of place that springs to mind when you think of fjords – epic landscapes, steeped in history. Indeed, llegend has it that Vikings and trolls once battled on these very waters. In many ways, it feels like something straight off the pages of a Tolkien novel.
Vik also has two pretty stave churches, which were built on sacred Norse land. Vik is very atmospheric and mysterious, with mists rolling off the mountains, crisp air, and the silent, glassy fjords. This land is steeped in Viking heritage and Scandinavian myth and is just waiting to enchant you.

Charming Lysekil is a quintessential seaside town on Sweden’s west coast where the red granite cliffs meet the open sea. Once a fishing village turned elegant spa-resort, this coastal gem offers a delightful mix of relaxed strolls in the beautifully preserved old-town Gamlestan, visits to the intriguing marine world at Havets Hus aquarium, and scenic hikes across the smooth rock formations of Stångehuvud Nature Reserve. Expect fresh seafood beside the harbour, fine views over the Gullmarn Fjord and a taste of Sweden’s coastal rhythm.
