This itinerary, inspired by Agatha Christie's sailing on the very same ship, recreates the magic of her tour-de-force novel Death on the Nile. Sailing the Nile from Cairo to Aswan, you'll stop daily at some of Egypt's most important historical sites. Explore the Great Pyramids at Giza, and the holy city of Abydos, home to remarkably well-preserved temples and ancient inscriptions. Descend on the Valley of the Kings, exploring royal tombs and uncovering the secrets of the afterlife. You'll finish your journey at the edge of ancient Nubia, surrounded by lush tropical palms and yet more sacred temples. Onboard the Steam Ship Sudan, you'll discover a charming restaurant, airy rooms and peaceful lounge areas, the perfect place to retire after a busy day of sightseeing.

With a further two nights in Cairo, you'll have plenty of time to explore the city from your centrally-located hotel base. On your first full day, you'll take a private air-conditioned tour to the Great Pyramids of Giza, the Sphinx, Solar Boat Museum, Memphis and Sakkara, with an expert Egyptologist to guide you through. The following morning, you'll be accompanied to the fascinating Egyptian Museum, Citadel, Mohamed Ali Mosque and the bustling Khan El Khalili Bazaar as you get to know Cairo more intimately. Take a moment to stop and listen to the cacophony of sounds around the city, everything from car horns to the melodic call to prayer create a symphony of chaotic wonderment.

You'll tour the the Temple of Seti, beautifully restored with rich, colourful bas-reliefs, before heading back to visit the Temples of Dendera and Hathor, the latter recognised as the Goddess of love and joy. On the west bank of the Nile, Dendera is often referred to as one of the best-preserved buildings from ancient Egypt, housing intricate carvings, hieroglyphics and ornate ceilings within. Day 6
Luxor, Esna and Edfu

This morning you'll embark on a bucket-list adventure to the Valley of the Kings. Luxor's west banks were the chosen site of royal burials from 2100 BC, but the New Kingdom Pharaohs (1550–1069 BC) chose this isolated valley instead to house their remains. 63 royal tombs are located here, and on today's tour you'll visit Ramses VI and Ramose as you learn about the ancient Egyptian focus on the afterlife. You'll also stop at the Valley of the Queens, where the wives of Pharaohs were laid to rest, and the Valley of the Nobles, a cemetery on a much larger scale. You'll re-join the SS Sudan for a leisurely lunch as the ship sails onwards to Esna and Edfu.

Day 7
Edfu and Kom Ombo

You'll start today with a visit to the Temple of Edfu, a remarkably well-preserved building dedicated to deities Horus and Hathor. Construction of the temple began in the 3rd Century BC and was completed 170 years later; today the building is almost completely intact and contains important inscriptions from the Hellenistic period. After lunch, the SS Sudan will sail to Kom Ombo for sunset, giving you the opportunity to visit the Temple of Kom Ombo in the evening, standing tall on the banks of the Nile.

Day 8
Aswan

Today you'll continue to the end of the Nile Valley and the start of ancient Nubia, a region extending from the river valley to the shores of the Red Sea, down into Sudan and across to the Libyan desert. From Aswan, you'll visit the Temple of Philae, one of Nubia's most important sanctuaries and home to Isis, Goddess of marriage and fertility. Palm groves and tropical plants dot the banks of the river here, where floating restaurants serve freshly caught fish. Spend some free time in Aswan before dinner onboard the SS Sudan. Highly recommended is the Sound and Light show in Philae, where a rainbow of colours illuminate the grounds as the story of Isis and Osiris is recreated, bringing the temple to life.
